Default VTEC solenoid

A couple weeks ago my friend checked out my engine i bought, d16block with a d15b head.
he noticed that the vtec solenoid was missing and told me if I started the car and didnt have the solenoid the engine would start up in safe mode.
is this true ?
reason why is after my friend got my engine up and running we took it out real quick around the block and drove it and it seemed fine to ME.
me being a noob to the whole tech side of things.

Limp mode. And without the VTEC solenoid, it will run fine I would imagine. But isn't there a spot where oil comes shooting out now?

Wouldn't it say VTEC on it anyways?

just go buy a solenoid from a junkyard and throw it on there. . plug it in. . maybe solder the connections . . if they charge you more than $40 they're fools!

yeah. let's throw a Vtec solenoid on something that might not possibly have Vtec.

Hmm.....yea. Well it's weird because my friend used to own a Purple 93' EX that had a VTEC engine, which was the most powerful stock SOHC I've ever been in, and it didn't say VTEC on the valve cover. I'm still wondering if it was a D15b or if it really was a D16Z.....because I've never been in a D16Z that quick

But then again, I've never driven a D15b.....perhaps it had a motor swap, I never got to check the engine stamp, and the car is long gone now. Some chick he sold it to wrecked it within a week....it was a tragic loss

i was only confused of what one user said earlier.
it is a vtec head, it says it on the valve cover.

If there is no oil you will be OK. I would think that there would be though. I will look at my spare engine in the morning and let you know first thing.

or you can just look and if you see a hole where the solenoid would be then that will answer all your questions. and of course oil will come out, doesnt oil run through the solenoid? be careful, duct tape.

EDIT: don't use duct tape.
