So, I am sure there are plenty of these why does my b16 smoke when I beat on it threads but I need specific answers from people who have solved this problem. I have a 2000 Si. All stock with no muffler or cat. Car has had the most responsible owners possible. The engine runs flawless but burns oil in vtec. Ive heard valve seals and rings. Im sure its not rings. If I want to replace the seals is there a good perforance way to go? And for the meantime, im using honda recommended 5w 30 full synthetic mobil 1. Whats best oil to choose with my consumption? Ive heard mixing tranny fluid with motor oil helps condition the seals because motor oil hardens rubber. I basically want this to be fixed or improve asap. Any experience will be great. Tia

Yes, Vtec does consume oil.

Just to make sure there are not visible leaks, check the spool valve, the distributor oil, valve cover gasket.

Lift the car, check between trans and engine.

If that is ok, chances are you are burning, you might want to do a compression check, the make sure the engine is healthy.

If all checks out, how much oil are you burning?

Do not mix trans fluid, that is like a used car trick to make the car see like it is not losing oil, but might damage seals, swell them.

Most Honda's do consume oil in the higher RPMs. You could try a conventional oil, my friend's S2000 burned a lot of oil with synthetic but with conventional he doesn't burn any.

What conventional oil should I use? I have 143k miles.

Personally I use Castrol GTX/whatever's brand name and cheap at Advance Auto. I change my oil every 3,000 miles so conventional is fine by me

I was going through about a bottle of oil every week and a half/two weeks in my car, i have a b18c and dont really romp on it much. I started using this stuff from autozone 'NoSmoke' its called. Its superrrrrr thick and you add half the bottle (8oz) to a 4cyl motor like ours and it has greatly reduced my oil burning. In fact, im still at the top hash mark on my dipstick after 3 weeks!! And i romped on it quite a bit yesterday too. Try it! Only 5 bucks, worth a try. It wont work much if you really need top end work and burn tons of oil ( my accord used to burn a bottle a week, driving sloww too) but it might help you solve your problem!

And re conventional vs syn, i have only used mObil1 full syn 5w30.

The problem with stuff that thickens your oil is that you might be starving your engine of oil at high rpms.

Basically it is acting like a thicker oil, problem is will it work when you do your next oil change? Plus, in the winter you do not want thick oil, esp in cold climates.

Why don't ya just use 5W-30 High Mileage? It's better.

I used castrol 5w30. Didnt get high mileage though. For the few days I thought it was fixed perfect. Its a lot better but smoked on me when decelerating around 5k rpms. Its really getting old. The valves and seals are 6k miles old. it runs perfect.

Decided to bump this thread. I have the same issue where im burning oil only in vtec with my b16a2. Compression tested 210 at all 4 cylinders. I know its burning oil because i see blue smoke out the exhaust during vtec. Any ideas other than valve seals or oil control rings??

My compression results were good, my final results to the problem were that my oil rings were seized to the piston. The reason my compression was so good was because the oil sealed off the compression rings better.

I work for a lube shop and I see this problem all the time especially with cars that are tuned up. Really the best possible thing to do is to use a thicker oil like 5w40which is more like a euro oil and use oil stabilizer like lucas it normally stops it or slows it down at least. And also make sure that you are checking your oil cause they lower it gets the worse it will burn. And you can always tell if its low when you vtec doesnt crack. As for fixing the problem I have no clue what it could be other then the normal stuff people have already said so just try a better oil like I said and you should be good
