Vtec not engaging idoling high? please help

can anyone tell me why my vtec is not engaging and my rpm idol is jumping to 1500-2000

You must have a check engine light.. Check to see what code(s) it is.

will do, The only thing is it was fine this morning. I changed the valve cover gasket and put on a diff intake but that is all o yeah changed the oil. What would make it do this. sorry i am new to vtec i have an LS and just got a b16a civic i'll just count the lights
