Icon2 VTEC issues

I have a 95 Civic 2 door coupe. i am a first time honda owner. have a couple friends who are fairly knowledgeable with hondas though. It had a PO6 when i first bought it and a non vtec wiring harness. the engine is a D16z6 bottom end with a y8 head and a TD-42u distributor. we wired the vtec accordingly and i put a P28 in. the car does run better and stronger with the new ECU but it doesnt seem that my VTEC is working. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

What do you mean "seems"? It works or it doesn't. Can you take it to redline. DO you throw a CEL when VTEC is supposed to kick in?

Yes I can take it to the redline. And no there are no codes. The ECU I have came out of an automatic I have a 5 speed. The only codes are for the parking lock which is code 19 and for the o2 sensor which is 41

Take it on a back road, get it into second gear at regular driving speed (i.e. 15-20 mph at approx. 3000 rpm, idk). Then mash the pedal to the floor. Listen for the engine to get louder, and feel for a sort of stronger pull (although these are SOHC VTECs, they don't seem to pull as hard without that exhaust VTEC that the DOHCs have). Then come back here and give us a heads up of what's going on. A video might be helpful too if you can manage it.

Can I upload a video here? And no that doesn't happen. I have tried that already. At te higher RPM it throws smoke and backfires when I shift

borrow a multimeter from one of your friends. download a service manual. open with PDF, go to Section 6: Cylinder Head/Valve Train, go to page 6-3, troubleshoot.

P28 for a MANUAL!! You said yourself the one you have is for an automatic and you are 5-speeding it now.

No clue for vtec and redlining normally means ots working.
But to fix your auto lockup code desolder the resistor in the ecu. I think its r18 and r17 needs a jumper. I dont remember its been a while.

And second pop the valve cover off and look toake sure all bolts are there.
I had the vtec bolt come lose and oil wasnt locking the rockers.

Also understand vtec on a d16 isnt the same as a b16 or b18.
