Default vtec issues

I did a swap in my buddies 92 EG dx. We swapped in a D16Z6, everything runs fine, idles fine. I wired up the vtec, two wire from the ecu to the solenoid and switch and grounded the third wire. The car is running a chipped P28 and vtec doesn't kick in and redlines at 7k. What could possibly be the problem? Any rough ideas so that i know where to start?

Put a 12v light on the vtec wire from the ecu and see if it lights up when you should be hitting vtec, if it lights up the ecu is sending the signal.

Are you getting a check engine light at any point, or when vtec should engage?

keep in mind, vtec changeover on a single cam is not very noticeable..it might be kicking in and you just don't know it.

Indeed. Also, if the ecu is sending signal clean out the vtec solenoid or try another and see if that helps any.

all 92 Eg's are already pre-wired for vtec..it was the only year that all eg's (cx, dx, ex) had vtec wired up from the ecu to the shock tower. You have to find the pin out from the shock tower to the solenoid..cause there are already wires from the ecu to the shock tower..

then this one is a diff year because vtec at the ecu wasn't pre wired. I did assume that vtec was kicking in and i know it's no as noticeable as a dual but it redlines at 7 or about 6700 as if vtec isn't engaging.

Stock tachs are crappy enough that the difference between 7200 and 7000 is easily blurred, some are good but generally they are not to be trusted. Try the light or a different ecu or something like that.
