Default VTEC issue

in a 99 civic si.. i was driving it and out of no where vtec started acting up.. it would just cut in and out between 5500 and redline. finaly the CEL came on and the codes are as followed:
P1259: VTEC System Malfunction
P1298: Electric Load Detector (ELD) Circuit High Voltage (ithink 1298 was the code)

has any one ever ran into this problem before?
