Default VTEC and ECU Questions

I have a D16Z6 swap in my 95 CX hatch. I have wired in my 2 vtec wires but not the 4 wire 02. The car does not seem to be going into VTEC. It only throws a code 1 for no 02. My question is will it not engage VTEC until it sees the 02? Or is single cam VTEC just very subtle and hard to hear, since most cars really change engine pitch, I also have a short ram so that note should be very clear, any ideas or am I just nuts?

not true

only certian engine lights will make vtec not work.

and its a z6, odds are slim you will hear/feel vtec anyway.

vtec will not kick in w/out the o2, make sure you get the correct o2 , d16z6 sensor is a bit expensive try to get one with a connector, but if you get a cx or dx o2 your vtec will not kick in, and you will redline alot sooner like 6500 rpm instead of 7200. the short ram has nuttin to do with your vtec prob. hope i helped a little.

I have the correct 4-wire 02 I just need to connect it. I was just windering if the ecu is throwing a code (code 1) will it engage? Since VTEC change-over is rather pronounced on dual cams I thought ince I was not hearing an engone pitch change I might not be kicking in. HOwever I am reving to 7200 before my cut-out so is the engine in limp-home mode or is it just dumping fuel at WOT to make up for the fact that the 02 is not there, and no I have no CAT but the 02 on a Z6 plugs into the header so I don't think that is an issue.

If you really want to hear it, take off the muffler, when i was installing my Apexi Muffler I took the stock exhuast off and started the car and it was loud as hell. but when i did it I could really hear that vtec going. it's not pleasant to listen too, nor is it a good thing for your exhaust but you can hear the pitch change easily when it goes to vtec w/ the muffler off.

also not true. the o2 sensor has nothing to do with vtec.

the ONLY things that vtec will not work when the CEL is on are these:

any Vtec related ones (pressure, solenoid etc)
ANY limp mode codes, TPS, CKP etc
and the VSS code.

thanks I thought it would be odd to be able to redline at 7200 but not have vtec kick in. It just runs rich as all hell and I can watch my fuel gauge drop at WOT, it will go from half to empty and back again if I stomp on it, I guess having my 02 connected will fix that.
