VTEC activation switch
Im working in a VTEC activation control, and I need information about the solenoid in the valvetrain. How much current does it takes? (transient current would be the best). May I activate it using an open colector or open drain circuit? or it needs a constant current like some injector coils? Which is the max power it can dissipate without overheating? How Honda normally does it?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

Re: VTEC activation switch (_gurusan_)
MSD makes a VTEC activator switch. It's plug and play. Now my question to you is, what are you going to do about the extra fuel that is needed? What about the timing? With that said and KNOWING that you don't know what the **** to say now, leave VTEC the **** alone and let your ECU do the work.

Re: VTEC activation switch (fasthatchb18c1)
This is why I don't post here usually. You americans are used to solve ANY problem you have with your car (well, almost all of them) buying the stock part around the corner. HERE in Venezuela a P28 isn't that affordable and easy to find, and that's when you start researching and learning how everything works. Doing things yourself means saving A LOT of money, and learning even A LOT more. I DON'T blame you 'cause if I lived there I'd go and buy a P28 or any VTEC ECU like you do, 'cause we all agree is the best and easiest way, BUT DON'T tell me I've no idea of what I'm talking about 'cause I bet I have more than you do. I'm not saying I'm better than you guys, but you just don't care about things like this, when I have to so that's the difference.
EVERY Honda ECU can be EASILY converted to VTEC, and it's about $14 the whole convertion. With that, and a burner, I can EASILY convert my ECU to a P72 for example, having the hi-cam and lo-cam timing & fuel maps, of course, and it was only $14 plus the chip's price and that's it.
The problem is I can't find one of the last parts that's needed for the VTEC convertion. So while I wait for it to come from the US, I'm using a hybrid map. Hi-cam map from 5500 RPM or upper, and low-cam map for 5500 RPM or lower.
I KNOW it's not the best idea, but it's just by now. So I don't wanna buy MSD VTEC activation switch 'cause I will have my ECU converted to VTEC and that won't be a problem anymore so it's just by now.

you're saying you can afford a vtec engine, but not the ecu? the reason "we americans" use stock parts in cases like this is because honda knows a LOT more about that engine than you do. so trust them, don't come crying here when you **** something up

Re: VTEC activation switch (Littlegreend15)
It's not just about affording it, it's about finding it. The engine was built by parts, finding every part with patience and time. It's an LS/VTEC not a VTEC engine, and the swap is using lots of stock Civic parts 'cause of the same reasons we're doing this VTEC hybrid. Parts are really hard to find, and if you do find them, they're expensive.

What are you waiting on for the ECU vtec conversion?
All you need are a couple resistors, jumper wire, soldering braid....

Re: VTEC activation switch (Imprezor)
aright to the guy with the vtec activation switch... i have a 92 hatch with a sohc vtec motor a mugen chipped p28 with a governer at 8400 and vtec at 5200. my problem was once i hit 7gz the vtec would shut off so i put a switch on it.
it goes from off cam to high cam and it pulls a helluva lot harder and i switch it at 5 gz and in 1st gear if im racing i leave it on the whole time.
i put a switch on my friends 94 gsr and it pulled a lot harder too. also the fuel thing if your worried about that just get an adjustable fuel regulator and bump it up 2 psi. honda's run faster lean but you cant run em too lean for obvious reasons.

oh yah just get a simple on and off switch run a 15 amp fuse inline from the battery to the switch then to the solenoid and make shure you unhook the computer. also you cannot do this to obd2 cars because it WILL set a governer at 5500!

Re: (SlepT ej6)
Thanks for the answers!!
The VTEC conversion will be in my hands in about 2 week, and I don't think break in process will end before the kit arrives, so I just wanted to do the switch for a little while.
RPM Vnz don't have any idea of what I'm talking about 'cause they always do things right (the way you do it, the way I would do it I were them/you) 'cause they've got the money to.
Thanks everybody for your answers, any other advice?
