There are screws on the cluster board inside the cluster.. tighten all the screws because if there loose that could be your problem.

Do this only if it still does it have you replace the VSS

Just use a damp cloth if anything.

If your speedometer is jumping...most likely your VSS went bad. Cleaning it wont fix it

The thing is that i had no problems until i changed the coolant hose and i had some coolant come out of the firewall locatation when i pulled the hose off.

how old/new is your car?

hayabusa160 09-30-2004 09:40 PM

Re: Vss Sensor *How to tell if its bad?* (Built2Spill)

when my vss was all messed up it didnt throw any codes.
but it was because the pin on my harness was broke so it didnt get full contact.
the speed would jump all over

Built to Spill 09-30-2004 09:43 PM

Re: Vss Sensor *How to tell if its bad?* (hayabusa160)

But from what we know he didn't mess with his vss ...so a broken pin wouldn't matter. The only possible explaination i can think of is you could have shorted out the vss/sensor from spilling the coolant..

Re: Vss Sensor *How to tell if its bad?*

go to radio shack or somewhere and get some contact cleaner,..clean up the harness really well,..let it dry out,..and then plug her back in,..i got my VSS wet awhile back while degreasing underneath the hood,..the speedo would die out and kick back on the day after i washed things under the hood,..after a couple days it dried out and the speedo went back to normal

hayabusa160: is that VSS for a Dseries motor or bseries motor?

it doesn't matter, they're interchangeable https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

yep they are interchangeable i used my d15 vss on my b series tranny worked fine i think the d series one is better its all metal unlike the bseris one thats all plastic.

Re: Vss Sensor *How to tell if its bad?* (hayabusa160)

not to hijack the thread, but what would cause the speedo to read way off. i have a gps unit and it sayes when my speedo reads 120, im actualy doing 113. and at 75, im actuly going 70, is this the vss. this is on the 13" oem wheels so incorrect tire size isnt the problem.

Re: Vss Sensor *How to tell if its bad?* (a1320honda)

all speedos are off from the factory. There are actually SAE guidelines as to how much they can be off at certain speeds. American cars are closer to correct than Japanese cars...and German cars are the most off.

Re: Vss Sensor *How to tell if its bad?* (2.0 EK)

They sell a spray-can of contact cleaner at the autoparts store too. It's great stuff. Spray it down good, let it dry, then put a thin coat of diaelectric grease back on the contacts before reassembly.

The test procedure for it's a bit lengthy, and not something I'm going to type out for fear of you zapping something. Clean it up, if it doesn't work, go steal one from a buddy and see if that fixes it.

88hondahatch 10-01-2004 09:06 AM

prolly not just a little dampstill

when it breaks it doesnt throw any codes

my hatch's tach worked sometimes but no speedo when it broke untill i remembered i had a GSR tranny laying around and jacked the one off that.
