Visited Ref: FAILED inspection, need your help!
Hey guys,
I took my car into the Ref today to get a BAR certification, at Goldenwest College, but I think I failed miserably. I have a 1994 JDM B18c (GSR) and my only mod is a Comptech Icebox. Here are the test results:
Visual Inspection:
Fail: Ignition timing: 19 BTDC (The range was 14-18, but the ref was cool about this. He said he did not mean to be picky by being off by one, but he said he had to follow the rules).
Modified: Fuel Evaporative Controls (I think this was because the **** of the evap purge was broken off and missing the connector to the wiring harness, hehe.)
Modified: Wiring to sensors (I think this is related to the evap purge missing the connector. Would I be able to find a junkyard connector for this, then hide the wires into the rest of the wiring harness?)
Emissions Test:
%CO2:
15mph
Meas: 14.3
25mph
Meas: 15.1
%O2
15mph
Meas: 0.4
25mph
Meas: 0.0
HC (PPM)
15mph
Max: 92 GP: 282 Meas: 204 FAIL
25mph
Max: 58 GP: 232 Meas: 75 FAIL (not by much)
CO (%)
15mph
Max: 0.56 GP: 2.06 Meas: 0.72 FAIL (not by much)
25mph
Max: 0.54 GP: 2.04 Meas: 0.15 PASS
NOx:
15mph
Max: 717 GP: 1964 Meas: 3224 FAIL / GROSS POLLUTER
25mph
Max: 767 GP: 1764 Meas: 346 PASS
Here are his other comments:
*Must be able to ID computer*
What happened was I bought a 1995 gsr ecu from another HT user but the sticker was missing. I found another sticker with the P72-A01 on it, but it is between the plug and the case. The only way you can see it is if you unplug the ecu and look at it from an angle (I know this sounds retarded). I told the ref this but he did want to unplug the ecu.
*TC 43-O2 sensor must be cleared from computer*
My ecu has been throwing a CEL 43 for the past couple of weeks now, but for the past couple of days, the CEL never came back on, so I ignored this. If I reset the ecu, will this CEL disappear from the memory?
*S/B @ 14-18 BTDC w/ connector shorted*
I think I just have to retard the timing by 1-2 degrees to pass this.
This also might be relevant:
*I ran 89 Octane and used half a tank of "Guarantee to Pass".
*My CAT has 223K miles on it
*The ref turned my car off while he did the inspection for 30min, this probably le the cat cool down a lot.
In Conclusion:
1) What would I need to do to pass all of the 15mph and that one 25mph tests?
2) Would I be able to go to an Acura dealership and get an ECU verification form? This way the ref does not have to physically look at my ecu?
3) If I reset the ecu, will the CEL 43 disappear?
Thanx for taking the time to read this, and i would really appreciate your help, thanx!
James

1) you can try running your car hard before the test and leave it running while you wait to keep the cat nice and hot. also try changing the air filter if you havent already.
2) not sure about this one, i think it'd be easier to borrow a gsr ecu for the test.
3) maybe someone else can help with this one. im not sure, but where i went, they were real lenient and could care less if it was ghetto rigged, as long as it worked the way it should it was ok.
4) if youve fixed the 02 problem, it should disappear.
hope this helps any.

hey, thanx for the reply.
Yeah, i did run the car for an hour before the appointment, but the ref and his assistant took 30min to complete the visual inspection before they even started my car for the emissions test. I bet the cat cooled down a lot during that time. The air filter is still like new since i use a comptech icebox.
The ecu IS a gsr ecu, except that it is missing the sticker on the outside with the p72-a01 on it. The only other sticker i found was on top of the plugs. But the ref did not want to unplug the ecu to check.

o sorry i thought it said there was no label on it so i was advising you to borrow another gsr one.. not that yours wasnt one. but in that case yea you can try to go to the dealership.

some things you might want to try:
- get a new cat. $100 at kragen. it'll trim down all your #'s
- use the evap purge solenoid from your stock motor's setup.
- get another bottle of G2P. you should run it to empty before re-testing
- do a full tune up (cap, rotor, plugs, wires) and oil change
DO reset the ecu fault codes are sometimes stored in the memory for a while. contra costa college let me idle my car while they were inspecting it. they didnt turn it off until they pulled it onto the dyno
anyways, good luck!

Re: (Jedi_Sol)
*update*
I found the evap purge solenoid connector, turns out it was plugged into the IAB solenoid underneath the Intake manifold. After hours of researching on HT, i found out why they did this. So i disconnected it from the IAB and reconnected it to the evap purge solenoid. Looks like i will be running without my secondaries for the time being.
