Default Very weird problem with my 97 Civic HX....please read

Okay so the past couple of days when I stop at a light the idle drops down to about 500 and the car feels like it is going to cut off on me but it never does. I thought it might have been the fuel system, so put in new wires, plugs, and cleaned out the injectors. Still the same problem...but the funny thing is it does not happen all the time. Seems like it does it only when it wants too.

So I am coming home from work late one night and of course the roads are dead so I have to open it up a little. I am going 80-90 and everything is fine. I press the game some more and vrrrooooooommmm the damn thing shoots up to 7000 rpm out of nowhere. I quickly let off the gas and had to coast the rest of the way home. I get to my exit and hit the gas again...rpm shoots up more then it should and the car really isnt going anywhere.

Finally made it home. I drive it around the block today and the damn thing is fine. Its not even trying to cut off on me. This is confusing the hell out of me cause it is not consistant at all. I was thinking it was the trans but I am thinking that the problem would be more consistent if that were the case.

i am going to have to make it down to a shop to get it hooked up to a diagnosticts machine to see what is going on exactly, but before I do that does anyone have any idea what the hell is going on with this damn thing.

Thankds in advance for all help offered.

hmmmm when my car would so the same (go down in RPM and die) it was timing....I dont know about a 7K idle...especially when the fuel cut/rev limit (I always get confused on these two ) is something liek 6250 or some ****

yea, its an automatic CVT and if it is the tranny I am pretty much screwed. A rebuild is expensive and they arent that common either so a replacement is a slim to non possibility.

If it is the timing how would I go about adjusting it...ive done a decent amount of work on the car but never had to deal with all this stuff before.

i have the very low idling once in awhile in my 97 hx as well. I have read that the CVT tranny in this generation is VERY unreliable, and typically give out sooner or later. Mine does some weird stuff, but it never shoots up to 7k or anything like that. My problem is that whenever i come to a stop, the cvt belt seems like it's struggling and has alot of noise.

i chose to go with a swap due to the high price of a rebuild, but good luck with the car

might as well swap an engine in!
That's what I did when my old hx tranny went. Swapped in a b16 and Had to do auto->manual conversion too. Ended up costing only like $700-$1000 more than then hx's cvt tranny was going to be.

Yea id say its your tranny same thing happened to mine. Before long it will just decide not to move. Mine had around 90k when the tranny went out.
