valves on my D15B8, does this look normal? please help!
So i pulled my head today because I had a leaking head gasket and am about to change it out. when I pulled the head, this is what 2 of the valves looked like. The exhaust valve (smaller, white) is from the #2 cylinder and the intake valve (bigger, black) is from the #3 cylinder. The # 1 and #4 valves are all laying flat. Should these two valves be pushed out like that? keep in mind, before I pulled the head I placed the #1 piston at TDC and this is an 8 valve D15B8 head. I also had oil all over my spark plugs when I pulled them as well but im thinking that may be from needing new spark plug tube seals. not 100% about that though. Please help, i need to get this thing back on the road, my truck kills me in gas!!! thanks for any help in advance!

was told in another forum that the reason why is because my cam is still installed. could that be it? I really dont know s**t about single overgead cam engines.

If the cam is still installed it would have the valves away from the base circle of the cam moved toward the open direction. If you were really curious, you could try to turn the cam and watch the valves actuate.

I may do that but I really don't want to disrupt my timing. If I do, I go counterclock wise turning the cam gear right?

I may do that but I really don't want to disrupt my timing. If I do, I go counterclock wise turning the cam gear right? or does it matter? and if I do decide to do this, if I go a full 360 turn, will that get me back where i was to start with and not effect my timing? thanks

You dont know how to set timing do you? You can't just leave the head and the crank at the same position and expect to throw the head/timing belt on there do you? Do it the proper way and bring piston in CYL #1 to TDC then set your cam marks flush with the head and "UP".

new spark plug grommets will stop your oil prob. your in.valves are open alittle cause the your cam is still in your head.

yeah when I took the head off, i marked the belt, cam gear, and head so there wouldnt be an issue with the timing, this aint the first time I have taken off a head, just a sohc 8valve. And you can leave the head in the same position and the crank as long as you mark everything with a marker in a few spots (like the belt, cam gears, and head) Then you just line everything up, makes for a very quick install. done it many times on B series motors and never had any timing problems.

thats what i thought to about the spark plugs. The valves just looked a little open more than normal, giving me the idea that they may be stuck. ill rotate the cam when I get home and see what happens.

does anyone know which way I should rotate this cam? clockwise or counterclockwise from the cam gear side? If no one knows, ill look it up in the manual.

That IS NOT the proper way to set timing. You are going to be off a tooth. And you rotate everything towards you (as if it were still on the block)
