I'd chalk that up to just normal "pre-normal operarting temp clearance issues". Mine smoked right from the get go when I first got it while it was still cold. Once it warmed up all the clearances get to normal levels and you're fine. Just keep it below 3K RPM's until it gets up to temp and you'll be fine.

Valve seals aren't easy to change. If you got the time and the tools, go for it! The bitch is getting the valve springs in and out, then pull off the valve seal and hammering on new ones.

Valve springs are EASY on a D Series. B16 is a little harder.
