Valve Bolt broke :/
Hey guys so when i painted my valve cover a while ago i stupidly overtightened the bolts, and now the two clostest to the windshield are broken, the bolts broke right where the threads start, so i have no idea how to get the bottom part out...anyone have any ideas?

only thing i can suggest is one of those reverse drillbits(screw-out at sears). get a small one so you don't ruin the thread of the head
then...get a torque wrench!!! i learned the hard way too

take the valve cover off and you will see how to fix it, the cover bolts are actually only the top of a much longer stud that goes into the head.

see #20? you broke the TOP of that off (above the line next to the number). you can put a wrench on the big hex'd part (below the line) of it to take it out.

Thats great, but if he has a D16 then its just a hole for the bolt. If he broke the bolt in the hole then he needs an EZ out

You drill a small hole in the middle of the bolt, then you insert a threaded bit into the hole and back the bolt out

. . . except it breaks off in the stud as you are trying to extract it, and no drill bit available to a mere human will be able to drill it out because that SOB is so hard.

You should play the lottery.
BTW userdead626, when you replace the stud, make sure not to overtighten the new one. Valve cover bolts/nuts require ONLY 7 lb-ft of torque. People frequently overtighten them and snap them off as a result.

Re: Valve Bolt broke :/ (Targa250R)
Yeah unfortuantly as you can tell i found that out the wrong way, i went out and bought a handy-dandy tork wrench and fixed the front two ones. So you guys think i could drill out the bolts, or would i just make more of a mess? cuz eather way ima haveta to do something i think just dont know what

Re: Valve Bolt broke :/ (userdead626)
lemme be the first to say dont drive around too long if any with the 2 broken and your cover not sealed correctly on your head. I did the same thing you did, and my car felt horrible. There was such a loss in compression it was sad.
I went to my gf's dad whos a machinist at a shop and he was able to drill a tiny, i mean tiny hole in the center of the screw and back it out with an EZ out like everyone else said. Take it very slow but push down semi hard on the drillbit and it should work its way out. try to set magnets around the area your drilling to avoid getting chunks of metal in your head.
thats all i can remember...dont over tighten next time! but im sure you know that now.
gl man

just take off your valve cover,
that bolt you broke, has ANOTHER head to it, lower down on the bolt, that you can use a 12mm wrench to remove it,
just go to honda and buy a new one.
simple as that.
