Its easy enough to do yourself if you have the proper tool. A shop shouldnt charge you that much, it takes maybe a half hour MAX.

Why do you need to roll the car back and forth when you can just turn the crank bolt ?

No its a valve adjustment tool. Its like a 10mm wrench bent 90 degrees with a screwdriver on top that way the screw doesnt move when you are tightening the locking nuts. It's just a quicker/accurate way to do it. And I had to get a special feeler gauge that was bent about 90 degrees to fit under the lobes.

Correct, you dont need one though. Proper Feeler Guages, 10mm wrench and a flat head screwdriver and you are set also. Well, and knowing the proper sequence/timing marks.
depending on the vehicle you have you may need to bend your feeler guages to fit in the intake valves.
My dealer (Honda) charges 65.00 Labor, then you have to add whatever a valve cover cost.

Re: Valve Adjustment - Cost? (Calculator)
You've done it before - why NOT do it again??
The hardest part for me (D16Y7) was getting the valve cover back on while holding the valve cover gasket in place (with the correct application of HondaBond) and moving the throttle cable outta the way.
For my D-series, you def do not need the special tool. The special tool makes doing B-series a whole lot easier.
Someone actually made a DIY version - they just hammered a wrench onto the socket - voila', all done and you can fit the flathead screwdriver through the socket where the ratchet drive square would normally fit into.
