Default vaccume leak d15

i got a eg hatch off my friend last week and it has had a vaccume leak for a while now.
he tried to fix it and i took the intake mani off and tried everything but didnt help so i figured it is a crack in the mani.
i unhooked the IACV to make it less annoying for a temp fix.
sunday i noticed a burning type smell an a lil smoke from behind it. so i plugged the IACV back in and it still smells weird.
i was told it may b coolant leaking and hitting the headers where it bolts to the cat. i havnt had a chance to look. i cant describe the smell.
any thoughts?
