v-tec question
Hi guys,
I have a b16a in a 92si.
I find that I am not getting vtec although the car is warmed up. I may have to drive for about 20 mins after full warm up then it works. Then if I park up the car for a little while and then drive it again no vtec. Is this normal? I was wondering about the oil pressure( i don't have a guage in the car) Is there a way to check the pressure without one?

ok guys I understand that the car must be warmed up properly b4 it engages. It worked perfectly yesterday throughout the day. This morning I drove to work which is about an hour away. Just b4 arriving I tried it and no VTEC. I was wondering if with the a/c on would the car not reach the ideal warm up temp? I am leaving work in a little while and try it again. Will post outcome later.

water temp is not oil temp. It might take a bit for the oil to warm up even if your water temp is at normal levels. BTW Honda recommends 5w30. 15w40 is thicker but would run more pressure I would think. It is normal for VTEC not to engage until the temp is up to operating range. Maybe your oil temp sensor is bad? The engine must have a way of determining that the oil is up to temp. Just my thoughts.

ok it worked properly this afternoon. Yes there is a very distinctive sound when VTEC engagages at 5300 rpm. I'm not getting any cel's and when the a/c is on I can hear the change over sound. Also when it isn't working it will pull hard till about 7gs then hesitate a little then struggle after that.
So VTEC works with oil temp. not water temp?

Your stock temp guage is a water temp gauge, unless you do have an aftermarket oil temp gauge. Essentially water heats up faster than oil so even if your water is up to temp your oil might not be up to temp. VTEC will not engage until your oil is warmed up which sometimes can take a while, especially on cold days. The stumble you feel at 7000rpm.... Redline revlimit? Your tach is probably slow.

good info lone. I always thought it was water temp.
the ecu has no rev limit in it and I only feel that little stumble only when the VTEC dosen't engage.

wow, what a bunch of bull in this thread. oil temp has nothing to do with vtec engagement. thicker oil does make the pressure higher, but 15w40 (diesel oil) might be too thick to reach the pressure sensor's desired pressure. once again: OIL TEMP has nothing to do w/ vtec. also would like to add coolant temp doesnt have to be at operating temps, just above a certain degree usually around 110°. what ecu are you running, you say no rev limiter, so im assuming you went obd1 w/ a chipped ecu, if so do you know the bin that was used in the ecu.

I'm not going to argue with you at this point, but I'd just like you to explain your logic about oil temperature not having to do with vtec crossover.
