Default V-tec Malfunction

I've got a 98 Civic HX with a Mini-me I haven't seen before, so I'm pretty sure the guy that did it before I got the car wasn't properly thinking. It's a d16y5 Block with a y8 head. If I drive the car under normal conditions, no heavey throttle, no 'vtec just kicked in yo', the CEL and problems won't start. However, I recently ran the car on a circuit track for a toys for tots thing and after cracking vtec, high rpms, and alot of speed, my CEL popped on and the car would not go over 4krpm, which I'm assuming is when vtec cracks. After the laps were done, I pulled the code and got Vtec malfunction. But here's the weird part, I turned the car off, turned it on and I was able to go over 4krpm again. I checked oil, it was at max, I checked wires, none of them are shoot/burnt/or cut. I'm going to check a new ecu and vtec solenoid off my friends car, but before all that, any advice?

Oil pressure switch or the solenoid is where Id start...most likely not the ecu, but doesnt hurt to try

Make sure there is no gunk buildup on the solenoid. Also, vtec for y8 kicks in at 5600rpm

I know normally y8 Vtec kicks in at 5600 but the way it was acting at 4000 kind of had me guessing that the maybe the ecu was chipped or flashed so the vtec kicked in quicker? But I'm just kind of at the troubleshooting process cause I've never seen a mini me with a y5 block.

Let's hope it's something small and not expensive like the solenoid.

Not up here, Honda's are picked clean in minutes. I know a few people that might be willing to sell them but I'd still rather it be something less expensive or annoying to find.

CEL will go back off once you turn vehicle off then back on (for Vtec malfunction). Won't come back on until vehicle engages vtec again. (like, 99% sure)
