Uh it'll be a lot slower. A good half second in the quarter mile

Shift points at 7000 RPM...stock tire size

Y7 Transmission (from a hatch):
39 - 72 - 108 - 140

Y7 Transmission (from a sedan/coupe):
36 - 66 - 99 - 128

Y8 Transmission:
34 - 58 - 89 - 122

yeah it blows, i got the y8 on y7 tranny and the gearing is long as ****. Jesus im goin to the yard to see if I can pull a y8 tranny today, but the y8 engine on the y7 tranny is still noticeably faster than the stock cx engine, dont get me wrong.

why would y7 differ in the sedan/coupe compared to the hatch?

Sedan/coupe has a 4.058 final drive
Hatch has a 3.722 final drive

Bigger final drive = shorter gears, lower shift points

Y7 w/ Y8 trans > Y8 w/ Y7 trans IMO

the gearing on the y7 tranny is much longer, so it will wind to VTEC longer, i have the y7/y8 minime and it takes forever, so im changing it to the z6 or y8 tranny soon

I have a Y8 motor with a Y7 tranny with a 4.9 Final gear.

Best combo imo.

Not the best combo. 4.9 FD's are hardly streetable...and the gear spacing doesnt change when you swap the final drive. For instance...with the Y8 tranny when you shift from 1st to second it goes back to 5000 RPM. With the Y7...it goes back to like 4200 RPM. The only thing a final drive does is change the MPH that you shift at.
Best combination is an EX transmission with 20" tires. Don't believe me?

Y7 tranny shifting at 7200 RPM with stock tires and 4.9 FD:
31 - 56 - 85 - 109

Y8 tranny shifting at 7200 RPM with 20" tires and stock FD:
31 - 53 - 80 - 110

Thank you have a good day!

Interesting, maybe I should invest in some 20" Spinners

I was going to put the 4.9 on a Y8 tranny but was worried I would be shifting way to often for daily driving. Do you think it would be much worse then with the Y7?

I wouldn't mind having the gear spacing of the Y8...

Yes. Y7 w/ 4.7 FD = Y8...imagine a Y8 w/ a 4.9 FD

This will give you an idea...and 20" tires (NOT WHEELS, TIRES...13" wheels w/ low profile tires) is a substitute for a 4.7 FD...so just remember that...

Either way, its still going to be a stronger motor than what you are running now.

Icon5 Question about all this

This was very helpful !! So recently just got a beater 2000 ex with a y8 trans that's not shifting So I found a y7 that's in great shape got it on the low. Haven't put it in yet (the y7 trans) My question is...Would putting a clutch kit on the y7 and doing the wheel set up like you suggest comparable? Would it be worth my time?

FFS IT HAS BEEN 14 YEARS SINCE THIS WAS POSTED IN. These people have probably all grown up, bought a house and drive a ford edge to take their grand kids to school by now.

When you say it is "not shifting" maybe it is only a clutch problem all along.

If you are setting up for daily driving, you can certainly use a DX/LX transmission, the difference is barely noticeable.
