Used transmission inspection
Going to pick up a used s20 trans and want to know if there is any way to test it as far as checking for a bad input bearing before I gamble my money on a possible bad transmission. Thanks for the input.

Grab the input shaft and see if you can move it up and down, if it's got play in it it's really bad, be aware though that the bearing could still be rough and not have any play in it yet. Honestly for the little bit an ISB and seal costs it's probably worth opening the transmission to replace it and inspect everything else before you put it in.

Re: Used transmission inspection
I haven't had the time to drop the trans yet but noticed 5th gear started to gring a little bit and some difficulty getting into first and third. I may as well rebuild what I have and replace the synchros and all.

Re: Used transmission inspection
How much money were you planning to spend on the new transmission? Replacing synchros isn't cheap, largely due to there almost always being more wrong with the transmission. Once you have grinding the sleeve and or gear is usually bad. Just remember a new ISB and seal will run you between $25 - $30 for parts, so an otherwise good transmission bought for say less that $100 isn't bad.

Re: Used transmission inspection
it's listed on ebay so I would pay through paypal. If there are any issues with it, I can always file a dispute and get my money back if it's garbage.
