Used Japenese Engines?? Any Good?
I have to get a 1.6 L VTEC engine for my 96 (Turbo) Civic EX, and I have heard of all the places that sell used engines directly from Japan that advertise LOW MILEAGE and sell for about $800.00.
Anyone have experience with using these engines with success?

the problem with jdm motors is that you don't know what you're getting...how do you know the real milage? how do you know the previous owner didn't abuse the motor? etc...

If you find a good reputiple (sp?) importer of motors, then you could probably do a compression check. If they give you a bad motor (bad rod bearings, leaking, etc.) then have them return it and get a new one.
It is a hit or miss though, good luck.

well avg japanese ppl change oil every 3k km is the truth tho. but then you never knows.
i have seen D15Bs and ZCs with great condition a couple times.but well. its the truth that its all about luck

true.. thats why i payed extra to get a usdm motor from a reputable source.

3000 km = 1864.1 miles
But I agree with luserkid. It's hit or miss with used engines no matter from who or where you get them.

Swap in a d15b vtec. you can get them for around 400 bux and there is lots of importers who carry them.
I've gotten maybe 15 from C&T Japanese engine in Ontario CA and never gotten a bad one yet

This is a JDM D15B VTEC motor (a dirty azz one, as a matter of fact). No, it's not DOHC, it's a single-cam 1.5L VTEC motor.
Supposedly higher compression/HP compared to the D16 VTEC motors. But it's all the same to me *shrug*. Never dynoed either motor.
Um, yes, it'll swap into your car. It'll be weird though...It's OBD1 And your car is OBD2.
Tranny is different (or am I trippin, again? frick).
It costs around $400-$450 from http://www.hmotorsonline.com. Or you can buy my old one for $200- missing TPS and MAP sensor. But i don't ship. so

Hmmm, my Turbo runs great and it has for 80,000 miles now. Just started to leak oil slightly and I am getting it rebuilt.
THe higher compresion on the d15b engine doesnt sound good. Ive got a thicker head gasket on my d16 to LOWER the compression, so a smaller motor with higher compression might not be what I am looking for.
The obd1 issue could be a problem also since I am obd2 and have to put everything back to stock every 2 years to get it smogged. I want to make sure any changes or swarps I do are still "smog legal." Looking for someone to do it "under the table" was/is just too much trouble.

All you need to swap over is the head and block you can use your stock IM and an Dizzy ect.
The compression is only like 9.6:1 which is pretty low for a greddy kit. They use basically the same amount of boost even on the GSR kits and SI kit's which are 10.3~5 to like 11:1 compression with no problems
I used to run 9lbs on my old GSR and had 0 problems.
