Default Used Cars From Japan

I know its possible to buy a Japanese car from Japan for cheap, and then ship it here, but has anyone on here ever done, or researched more into this topic? Is it a headache? And even if you do get the car overseas to the US, how can you register it to be road worthy. Everyone knows each country has some kind of standards for cars on the road. I've been looking at all these different websites that offer the services to buy cars from Japan, and I kinda think it be pretty neat to do that>

i know you have to add the door reinforcement bars, the metal bumbers, and emissions system to get it legal but i dont know what else you have to do.

There are, but the people who know how to register imports won't share their secrets.

Yeah, I've seemed to notice this too...There are imported cars already here in the u.s. being sold...I just saw one in the HT classifieds the other day. I would go that route if I was planning on getting a jdm civic.

I've heard that if you ship the engine and the car (shell) separate that the government considers it a kit car and doesn't have to go through all the inspections and whatnot. I'll do some more research, my bro lives in Japan and is moving here with one of his cars in August.

this is very true

i recently helped my frined import a eg6 the deal was that the car was to be imported into the country at washington state bc u can prety much forget cali. but it took us about another 3 or 4 weeks and another 7 ports and we kept gettin rejected by customs. and we ended up coming thru the main sea board port in wilmington in the carolinas.. bc nc is very lax on inspections and sc doesnt even have inspections. so if ur gonna do it i say bring it thru the east coast.. and full cost was about 6500 bucks.. gl and i hope all goes well..

The modifications do not need to be done if it is a race or show only car. You could still drive it to and from shows and or races but I do not know about driving around without a specific event to go to. Canada is pretty lax about importing, if you have any relatives with dual citizenship it can easily be registered or military personal bringing cars back that they have purchased overseas.
