Used Car Paperwork
aright, so this friday, im making the 170 mile treck to finally look at, and hopefully purchase a 1998 dx hatchback. ive talked to the guy multiple times, and he maintained the car very well. it was actually his daughters car during her stay at arizona university, and he raised her well because she got oil changes and regular checkups every 3000 miles. only thing is theres a few semi-deep scratches on the front and back bumpers from when a garbage man scratched it up, but thats no big deal. but other than that it is clean, running strong, rust-free car.
now before i go down there and put down the cash to buy the thing. What paperwork do i need to go through? i know i have to go to a currency exchange or dmv or whatever to exchange the title, but what other paperwork is there to do before i can head home? (temporary plates, insurance?) and how much extra money will i need for the differnet paperworks.
any other helpfull tips for purchasing my first used car would be helpfull also. thanks in advance h-t

Re: Used Car Paperwork (backhatch)
I just used my plates and paid for the vehicle and got the title signed by the seller and then went to DMV and got it all registered and was issued new plates for it. This is Virginia though, but I am don't think it would be much different other places though.

In Virginia the car must be registered with DMV before puttin insurance on the vehicle. If not it is a 500 fine, that is due when registering the car. Like the other guy said, just call your local DMV and they will let you know what is needed to be done. Hope your DMV doesn't have as long of lines as the ones here. I hate the DMV here, you have to make it like an all day event!

isn't there like a bill which is like a receipt of the transaction? don't most sellers have one of those at hand for when they actually sell their car?

The main thing is that you have the title signed over and let your insurance company know that you are purchasing a car. Some insurance companies may not require you to fully insure the car the day you pick it up. Normally there is a standard bill of sale which exonerates the seller from any responsibilities from the car.
Registration should be taken care of with your local DMV.

no, that is incorrect, you have to have insurance on the car before it is registered. When you go to get it registered and tags and all it asks you if you have a minimum of liability insurance, and another one asks if you want to pay the uninsured motorists fee. But that is true about making the dmv an all day event Every state is different but most of it should be the same.
