Default used car dilema?

i put 500 down on a used 93 hatch today. right after i put the money down he told me the axles had been replaced and that it might need a new timing belt. it has 120 on either the original or the second belt. what do u think the cost of doing at least the timing belt repairs is? thanks.

also is it a big deal if the axles have been replaced and if that could be a threat to anything. thanx.

Time belt will cost about $375. What is the total miles on the clock? It's hard to imagine that the car is on it's second belt in the real world unless the guy is on a super tight service schedule.

My guess is the car at 120K, is overdue for the first timing belt change. Normally, it's done about 90-100K by most guys.

Axle being replaced may be a sign that car was not well taken care of in the past. Or maybe bad luck, consider the car has only 120K. Was the CV joints and boot covers done too?

i don't know why it cost you so much a new timing belt is 50-70 and about an hour to 2 hours labor depending on the mechanic. 50-70 hour\

so you should spend no more then 200 it is that big of a deal if the toiming belt is still on there but if it has snapped you might need to change the valves

you can do the timing belt yourself, just get a friend but you need a special tool to hold the inner part so you can loosen the bolt. takes alot of work but i managed to do it with a friend, saved me $425 as what the place i had gone to before told me they charge to do it.

he told you all this AFTER you put the money down? looks like he's up to something. i would suggest taking it to a well-know mechanic and get it inspected.

DID you drive it before you put the money down and if you plan on swapping then you don't have to worry that much. this guy sounds like a dick so you should definatly argue the price becuase of all the problems. use this to your advantage.

I assume he will need a new water pump too. Even if he does not, most shop would replace it anyways since they have the engine open. The job of timing belt and water pump just sort of goes together in most cases.

I dont know what everyone thinks but these are all sings that the car has been into some kind of a front end collision. I'd check the paint to see if the shades are slightly different. Or just ask the guy straight up what the car has been through. But I would risk it. I'd save a little more money and get something you know is good.

Both of my civics have needed the CV Boots replaced around 115k+. But it is just easier to replace the whole axle then to take all of the time to replace the boot.
