Default Used B18c1 engine. Need your input, please.

a non HT member is selling a b18c1 complete for 900 bucks. He states the mileage on it is 117k and needs head work. He says that the motor blows a little bit of smoke at hight rpms and that the compression test resulted in 150psi accross the board. good idea to buy it? my goals are a n/a daily driver and sometimes autox or track days.

$900 isn't bad, but i'd probably just move on because 1) fairly high mileage 2) owned by someone who probably had his fair share of high revs and racig with that motor 3) needs headwork 4) possibly questionable bottom end.

You're also not looking to build it up and dump a ton of money into it, and if you're going to be going to the track, a motor should be healthy and have plenty of life in it. For a dd/track car, you need something more reliable. just my 2 cents.

Unless that person knows the amount of "head work" it needs I would stay away from it. Seems from the smoke you are going to have to replace the rings and if you aren't doing it yourself you are going to spend lots of money. Take Boosts' advice and keep searching. You will find lots of stuff in the marketplace and craigslist. I think they have an orange county craigslist as well

That's the bottom line. If you don't know for sure what you are getting yourself into, probably not a good idea. For the price though, if you had the motor rebuilt from the ground up, you'll spend as much as a good clean legit GSR motor. Food for thought right there too. Spend a few grand on a motor you're told is in good shape, or spend a few grand on rebuilding a motor back to stock spec (or aftermarket if you like). Hard decision to be honest. I'm in the same boat as you right now. I bought a block from a member on here for $500. He says he rebuilt it himself but didn't have any machine work done. I bought a head for $100 that had some damaged cam journals. Repair work for that was suppose to be in the $200 range but I figure might as well do everything in one shot so I'm having it rebuilt, machined, valve job, etc. and now the total labor is estimated at $550 +/- $50 (not completed yet). Assuming that the block is good to go, I still need a transmission. All in all, I'm looking at a total of about $1800-$2000, potentially $2500 if something is wrong with the block or transmission (might even cost more still for misc stuff like alternator, distributor, manifolds, etc). Either way, you can find a good motor for about that much but you'll still never really know what has been done to it...or you can buy a cheap one and start from scratch with a full rebuild. Tough decision... I'd rather start with a complete motor that at least has good compression personally.
