Default USA or Canada

Hey guys,

I am looking for a 96-00 Civic. I live in Quebec and would be willing to drive to Ontario to pick up a car. The Question is, I was thinking about going into the USA and buying a car since it would be cheaper than here and less rust.. much less rust.

Would you guys think that I would have to pay taxes on the car from the USA and from Canada? I am an American Citizen if that makes any difference. I am looking around and would like to spend 2,000$ so I looked at cars in New York and found them cheaper. I just do not want to spend more money on taxes when coming over the border, or any hidden fees.

What do you guys think?!

Not much in ontario, a lot of rusted junk. anything mint with no rust for a 96-00 is about $3000+

But when bringing it back wouldnt I have to spend more money on taxes when bringing it back here? Would it still be cheaper?

From what I can remember in my research to see about bringing a Canadian car to America, I'd have to either own the car in Canada for a certain period of time (a year, I think) and then bring it over in order to avoid taxes, or pay taxes on it.

I remember the taxes being enough to discourage me from buying a car, but the cars I was looking at were more than two to three thousand dollars.
