Prybar it appart.
Did you make sure to get all the bolts that are behind the motor area? Like around the bitch mount? I always end up forgetting one back there and its scary to get when the tranny is ready to fall.

You don't need to take the whole starter off - not on a D-series anyway. You do however need to remove the lower starter bolt as that threads through the tranny and into the block.
