URGENT: checking BRAKE status
 

sorry for the dumb newbie question, but after taking off the wheel, where do i find the brake pads on my 95 cpe? I dont really know what the "clamp" things are called that clamp onto the disc. Note: I also have 4 wheel disc and abs if that matters.

The reason im asking is because after buying the car with 60k odd miles, its now at 112k with no brake work or checks done. In the past 2 weeks, i smelt a very very bad burning rubber smell, which i think came from braking.

I am going to take it to the hond dealer to replace what needs, so is there anythign i should tell them other than pads? thanks and sorry for the lengthy post.

Oh brother... That clamp thing is the brake caliper. The pads are inside. You should be able to tell how worn they are without taking the caliper off. Why are you taking it to the dealer?

i dont know how to do the brakes myself and if i mess it up trying myself, my car will be stuck in my garage. Im in the everett/seattle WA area if anyone wants to teach me how to do it.

How much brake pad is left before you need to change them out?

If your using oem pads they should have a wear indicator (a metal bar on the pads that wil touch the rotor when they are worn and make the squealing of work brakes).

There is a wear indicator on the pad. Once it gets to a certain point this indicator will rub the rotor, and make a squealing noise. That's when you know it's time to replace. Below is a link on replacing brake pads. It's for an accord, but the process is the same. This is one of the simplest things you can do yourself. The dealer will want over $100 to do it. You can get the pads yourself for $20-$50 bucks (Depending on which kind). 1 hr should be enough to get em replaced.

I agree. This is definately a DIY job, where you can even put back your old stuff in a couple minutes in the case of an emergency.

this still doesnt explain the rubber burning smell. I too have a similar problem at 120000 miles. I took apart my pads and inspected the caliper. what i found was that the rubber seal around the piston of the caliper was torn to shreads. this is actaully touching the pads themselevs and that may explain the burning smell. to replace the seal, you can stop by pep boys and get what they call them in the pep boys computer, a raybestos brake caliper kit. it is only 2 pieces, the rubber flexible seal and a hard plastic seal that goes underneath the flexible one. so to replace it, youll have to take off the caliper and take out the piston, unfortunately you will need to unhook the brake line and then bleed it when done.
