I personally hate Honda MTF. Every time I use it (old version and new friction modified version) it sucks. For some reason everything runs smoother for me when I use Castrol GTX 10W-30.

Yeah because I'm the only person thats ever done it. And the only person thats done it for at least 4 years. What do you think transmission "fluid" is? Its oil.
Everytime I think "hmm let me try out the Honda **** again", I end up changing out the fluid the next day because it feels terrible.
I've also tried Pennzoil Synchromesh and that feels ok for like a month then feels all jerky and messed up like Honda MTF.
whatever though, I'm not saying you shouldn't use Honda MTF, I'm just saying it has never worked out good for me.

Re: Type of Transmission Fluid for my trans? (GG99)
Well, you definatley cant go wrong with Honda MTF, thats what I use. But, there are other alternatives that are good and work. I used to use a mix I made up one day, having 2/3 of the mixture being 5w 30 Durablend from Valvoline, and 1/3 being 80w gear oil. It did its job.
Ive heard from few guys that are using GM Syncromesh on thier tranny's that its pretty sweet, better than Honda MTF. But then again, what feels good to one may not feel the same to another, ya know.
Go buy like 2-3 quarts of different things. Try them each out, and see which one you like the best. None the less, like I said earlier, you definatley cant go wrong with Honda MTF.

You smell trouble - I smell stupidity - on your part. Oil is oil, regular "engine oil" is fine in a transmission. People that swear by Honda MTF are just tools that haven't been around long enough.

Yeah, I always hear good things about RP, but never have used it in my own car. Good stuff though from what I hear.

I've never seen Honda MTF make a transmission shift any better, or grind less.

I'd go with 10w30, 5w30 is a bit too light and 10w40 is still a bit heavy if it gets cold by you.
I'm using 15w50 right now (all I had in the shop), gotta drain it out for winter though as 1st gear's getting kind of iffy when the transmission's ice cold .

So would have any other engine oil weighted right.

Wrong, I tried some cheap oil before and ran like crap. And than i switched it to Honda MTF, and felt a big difference in shifting. You are right about how oil is just oil, but i prefer Honda MTF in my preference.

You can put cooking oil in it and it'll probably do the job, but you not thinking about long term consequences, if oil is oil, why aren't vehicle manufacturers recommending engine oil in any transmission. Talk about stupid!!!

Yes, a 10w30 motor oil can be used as temporary replacement only, but motor oil deso not contain the proper addictives and can cause hard shifting and damages to your transmission. The keyword here is TEMPORARY replacement.

first off, if you dont know anything about something, dont chime in. motor oil is not just a temp fix. otherwise honda wouldn't say "if honda MTF isnt available, just use 10w-30." no, not every oil is the same. yes, there will always be differances between types of oil. thats not to say one will work and one wont. and you're an idiot for saying cooking oil will do the job. i'd pay to see you try it. you obviously know nothing about oil. and yes, motor oil is BASICLY the same thing as MTF. Of course honda wants you to use honda MTF... for the same reason GM wants you to use GM MTF in their trannys, and chrystler wants you to use chrystler in their trannys. THEY MAKE PROFIT OFF OF IT. so in that case, you shold probably only use OEM parts and NO aftermarket add-ons. just stop spreading misinformation.

First of all, my claim about cooking oil was just a counter-reply to another quote saying that oil is oil. I did not mean that cooking oil would actually do the job, so if you dont know how interpret someone else's comments, stay off the topic and mind your own F'n business before you call someone stupid or an idiot.
Second, Honda does recommend motor oil as a temp replacement, you are missing my point again. My post was based on my own and others personal experience. SO why don't you check your owners manual, read it and if you don't like it you don't have to do what they say, better yet why don't you become a Honda engineer and tell them what to do.

well maybe you should have "interper" his comment about oil is oil. he OBVIOUSLY didnt mean cooking oil is the same thing. so using your suggestion about "interpering" i figured out that what he meant by "oil is oil" was that MTF is basicly oil. and oil is oil, so why not use motor oil. its BASICLY the same thing, and i emphasise BASICLY. Yes, I know there are additives in most MTF's. And no, it won't creat any troubling smells

And I have read the honda manual, and the haynes manual, and i also have access to alldata.... i have not read in any of those that they recommend it as a temporary replacement. just an alternative if HONDAS product was not available. Even if they DID say it was temporary, again, because honda wants to make a buck and sell you THIER product, just like every other company on earth!!!
