Turbocharging a D series motor?
I have a 97 civic ex with a single cam engine. Is it worth turbo charging it or should i go a diffirent way with it?

Yeah man, its definitely a good start. Just do some research on what others with your current setup did and go from there. You should have a D16Y8, which is a single cam vtec and a nice lil setup for starters. And also, no other way besides boost is really going to give you a nice kick back into your seat "besides spray" but I've never been a fan of nitrous. Anyways, just search your setup and you'll see what I mean, there's probably been about 1500 people that have did write-up's on tons of different threads about boosting the D's.

i would deff turbo a d instead of s/c it. you will make more reliable power turboed then s/c. and make sure u get a upgraded clutch. you can boost it stock it u want, but depending on how much hp ur wanted, might have to go with rods and pistons. go to the f.i thread, theres tons of single cam posts to look at!

In the forced induction forum you will fine all the answers to the questions you haven't asked yet.
Go with a turbo, many more options and much greater power out put.
You'll also want to do the oil pump mod. Read, Read, Read, it's all out there.

We made 586whp. see my sig.
With stock parts, they say 240whp is about the max.
In the drag racing forum here there are a few single cam cars, a couple from around your area., mid-west.
D-series will have a ton of info, Hint don't ask what HP you can make.
Read, Read, Read, figure out how much $$$$ you can spend. Make a list of things you like while your reading the post. Then begin asking...

I also have the d16y8. With a greddy turbo or other turbos youll only be able to hit 190hp without rebuilding the block and head. with a jackson supercharger and kamikaze headers you can get around 230hp without rebuilding. I got the supercharger just havent installed it yet. Turbos have more lag time but you feel them more at the upper rpms and superchargers are felt right away cus they run off a pulley.

you can boost your stock motor, run about 7-8 psi and a really good tune, and it should be pretty reliable and make descent power (close to 200 i would say)
dont buy a cheap ebay kit, the turbos are crap, the piping on those kits are fine, pipe is pipe. the intercoolers are ok, but dont do that great of a job compared to a good brand.
i got an AI research (garrett) t3 off a mercedes 300d and rebuilt it ($80 total cost)
saab intercooler for $40
DSM 450cc injectors for $70
CRX HF manifold for $30
adapter plates for the manifold are about $25-$30
i give those examples to show that it doesnt have to be very expensive, if you look and find good deals.
just remember to get a GOOD TUNE! or it might not last you a week

If you are turboing a Y8 I would strongly suggest you get a Z6 block to build also. That Y8 WILL leave you stranded as it's going to blow.

as to why someone above posted, to do the oil pump mod
i dont know what that entails, but its supposed to help with the oiling issue
