Default turbo or swap?

i just bought a 99 ek and it has a stock dx motor in it but it also has 120k miles.. i want to know which would be better a swap or a turbo? if i swapped it i would need it to be smoggable and under 1700$ which would give me more power

Go for a turbo setup. But it all depends on your budjet. Myself Im building a y8 turbo with a 400hp goal. I dont know about anybody else, but having a single cam waxing dual cams makes a statement

turbo will not pass smog unless its the greddy turbo kit. are you look for quick power and thats it. if so then turbo. but a motor swap would give you a great platform for more potential. i would do the swap if you have the cash. for 1700, i dont think you can get a motor swap. you could get an ls swap. if you put a b16 tranny you would most likely beat your brother

swap it with a b18c gsr motor and you will beat a stock b16 in a ek easy but if you want a cheep swap get a b16a and you will have to get a convertion harness to convert it from obd2 to obd1 if you search around you can get a full swap for around $2500 and the converton harness will run you like $75 if you want a good motor go to http://www.hmotorsonline.com you can find the swap there and i got a convertion harness from weaponr.com for $75. the swap will come with everything needed to put it in. i just bought a b18c from them and put it in my 00 si. the swap will come with axles harness ecu shift lenkeg and all the sensors that you will need but it will run you around $2500 $2575 with the harness.. but it all depends oh how much you want to sped. if you turbo it it will probably caust you the same if you do it the right way. if you turbo it you will need a lot more than just a convertion harness. plus the shipping

And how often do you have to smog. You could always pull the kit off when you go to smog the car.

i personally have a 00 ex, for 1200 i pieced my own turbo kit together. ill murder b16's and then some. i would first see what condition your motor is in....do a leak down test through the valves(under 7% is fine) do a compression test(should be just about even across each cylinder)....then get back to us. if your motor is fine, do a y8 head/im swap and turbo, if your test numbers look bad, dont waste time with that motor, swap in a d16y8 and turbo that!!!! DOHC's are probably going to be out of the question for you except a stock b18b.

Yeah all you would need to run the Y8 would be an ECU, which you could always buy a chipped one and run Uberdata for the turbo. Swapping requires A LOT more parts, just slap a turbo on there.
