i have a whining sound as well, usually in colder temps. starts like 1 second after i start my car. i assume it's the tranny or something like that, maybe one of the accessory pumps. i don't believe it's the filter or intake, cuz i've had more than one setup on my car and still makes it.

it is a cool sound though

Mine makes a simular sound. Its my throttle body whisling. I have a CAI so its really loud. You can really hear it from the outside. I hate it cause now theres a big rumor goin around that im turboed, when im really not. It really sucks explaining to people that its not a turbo

it could also be the timing belt, it could be making the noise, or one of the belts. It happens in my car too. I don't think it's a good thing. I think my timing belt has oil on it from valve cover leaking.

A cold air intake makes a hollow hissing sound. I agree i think it is your intake.

Since it is a STOCK d16, I am guessing intake as well.

it's weird tho, with mine anyway. it only does it in the cold, the colder it is, the louder it is...is that just from expansion/contraction of the metals in the TB?

Cause that has alot to do with it and all. Vtec is just like a turbo, thats why it makes that turbo sound. You just cant hear it until you put a intake on it

I think its your fuel pump..

Lack of Fuel Pump Fluid sounds similar to an un-tuned turbo engine!

When was the last time you checked it? You might be low on fuel pump fluid. You are supposed to check it every 3,000 miles(with each oil change). If the fuel pump fluid is discolored or gritty you will need to change it.
