turbo for d16z6
Ok guys im a newbie here and i need some friendly advise. i drive a prelude but my friend drives a del sol with a d16z6. From what i have been reading, it seems that turboing the d series motor is a lot less hassle than h series. all i here when i talk about turboing is you better rebuild it first and i havent heard anything about that here. well anyways im trying ti pursuade my friend to turbo his d16 but im not very knoledgable of this motor or the parts that are sold for it. could some of you guys give me some good recomendations for turbo kits, and what not to do...etc etc. he does not have a whole lot of money so if possible keep this under 3000.
thanks a lot guys

Re: turbo for d16z6 (ludedudesi)
I've got a 93 del Sol Si with the D16Z6 and I'm currently working on turbo project for my car. I picked up a t25 and intercooler (eclipse/talon) off of a friend of mine (free of charge ) You can do the same thing and run safely at under 10psi. As far as a turbo manifold goes...you can use a hf manifold, but you will loose your a/c. This is not the route I will be taking, so I'm trying to find a good manifold at a decent price. Fuel...stock injectors or you can go with dsm 450 injectors. I will probably upgrade the pump once everything is set up. Tell your friend that it is definitly worth looking into. I'm satisfyed with what I have for now, but can't pass up the opportunity to try this since my start up costs where nothing at all. Good Luck! BTW....There is quite a bit of info on this exact setup in this forum, so check it out.

Re: turbo for d16z6 (ludedudesi)
I've seen it listed for anywhere from $1500.00 to $2200.00 More than what I want to spend right now. psi is going to depend on condition of the engine...milage, compression tests, blah, blah, blah...you will want to upgrade your fuel though.

Re: turbo for d16z6 (jdmsol)
hmmm well it would be nice if he could find a kit for about 1500. im sure he wouldnt mind running just around 7 psi. hell, itl be a lot faster than it is now. well what would be good to adjust the fuel? could u use a vafc? sorry about these questions, im always on hondaprelude.com and im amazed that you dont have to rebuild to have a reliable turbo on these motors. im learning more everyday.

What do you guys think that del sol would run with 7psi, decent driver, street tires, and good conditions. And what about whp?

I'm hoping for mid to high 13's, but I really don't like drag racing anymore. This will just be something that backs up the looks a little more.

decent fuel management can be had for under 200 dollers with smc and dsm 450s. Check this site out. http://www.homemadeturbo.com/

off topic...go check out the thread that is like 6 pages all about sohc Q&A. You'll find the answer a lot faster that way.
The thread is titled D-series upgrades (or something to that effect)

Re: turbo for d16z6 (Anubis44)
Since you have a y8 head you would look for a y8 HEADgasket. My friend did that mini-me swap on his 99 sedan. I personally think it's a waste of money that could be saved for a real swap if you really wanted to be faster. And if you don't really want to have a faster car then you shouldn't have done a mini-me. But that's just my .02 cents. Do whateva floats your little boat.

Re: turbo for d16z6 (1abSi)
i do have to say that the acceleration on the vtec motor is alot smoother and just nicer overall. so i wouldn't necessarily saw it's not worth the money. i mean don't expect to be fast, but it's a nice upgrade if you get it for a good price.

Re: turbo for d16z6 (Anubis44)
hmmm well it seems that we have gotten off topic. well anyways im still not certain as to what i should tell my friend to buy. i guess from what some have said to get a thicker head gasket and the greddy kit and he will be set. Help some more guys.

Re: turbo for d16z6 (ludedudesi)
back to the topic, you can't just slap on a turbo kit and expect everything to be peachy keen. They require lots of time and maintainence. If he is expecting to not have any problems then he's just askin for. None of the internals are made for boost, even at low levels. It's always a very good idea to rebuild the motor for turbo purposes. I feel that greddy has one of the best kits for d-series, followed by drag kits. I could go on and on ranting about turbo and blah, blah, blah, but I think you can get the point. Just be smart about what you do. Or in this case, your friend.

Re: turbo for d16z6 (Anubis44)
I can understand that, but when your buying a car you should consider EVERYTHING, including future plans or whatever. Should have just bought the model that comes w/ the y8 (EX). And of course I understand that sometimes we don't always have a lot of choices when buying a car (parents got it, money, or whatever), so i guess i can kinda see where your coming from.

Re: turbo for d16z6 (Ricey McRicerton)
well how about this, what if my friend did get the greddy kit.. then what kinda intercooler could he find used that would work well with it? also would a vafc be a good choice for managing the fuel along with the dsm injectors? and would it be better for him to upgrade to the y8 intake manifold and possible throw on a b series throttle body?
