Hey all,

Want to do a build...kinda new at this. Is it ok to boost a type r motor or is better to boost an LS motor. Any constructive input on this topic is helpful and welcome. Thanks in advance.

Boost either one. They will both perform great. Go to the F/I section, they have lots of infos.

Is it the JDM type R?

People would say go All motor with the Type R and Boost the LS and later on the road throw a vtec head.

It all depends on how much cash you have.

boost the ls, or make a ls vtec then its a built motor already that could handle boost

The LS has weak rods, at the very least put ARP fasteners on them.

The ITR will perform better out of boost.

You can put a turbo on just about anything, just how much boost you can run depends on the compression, fuel, tune, etc. Without stating what you're doing, it's hard to tell which would be better.

20-EM2-05 idk jdm probably usdm...whatever i can find locally

I hear what you guys are saying. Reason i ask about the Ls is bc ppl tell me the block is stronger and would withhold better with boost, however i really love the b18c5 it is a phenomenal motor so i want to just outright get that and boost it if there aren't any huge dilemmas.

thumper64 i would def do a little tuning--off the top my head i was thinking cams/cam gears

the c5 is great, but it's superrrr expensive and its far from an ideal motor to boost. it was built as a high hp n/a engine which means a high static compression ratio. yes it can be boosted, but its just easier to tune and start with an engine that has a lower c/r. with all stock internals you are going to more reliably get more power out of an ls on boost. if you want to make more power safely on the c5 you'd have to swap out the internals. in which case why purchase one in the first place.

D16SiHatch -- thanks

food for thought:

How about Ls block, gsr head for vtec, lsd tranny, boost, obviously some tuning done...

Tuning doesn't mean cams and cam gears. It means taking it to someone who knows how to keep an engine from blowing up by giving it the proper fuel maps and such.

The LS block is weaker than a GSR/ITR/Any VTEC block. The VTEC motors were built to rev high. They have added webbing and crank girdles to resist flexing, different water and oil pumps (at least pre 1996 I think) to prevent cavitation, longer rods for improved R/S ratio, and came with the better flowing VTEC head and thus flowed more oil to the head from the factory. The rods are strong enough to take a fair bit of power without modification. The only downside is a higher compression ratio, which for an NA engine is a plus. The only thing an LS has going for it is the lower compression and the price.

Here's a suggestion: Go to the Forced Induction forum and look around. After you're acquainted with the area, check out the FAQ. I guarantee your questions have been answered several times over...
