trying to decide, 4 banger domestic
I've always been a closet 4 cylinder freak, I used to have a pretty mean 2.2 turbo and intercooled. chryler lebaron w/ 5sp. I now have a mustang, but I'm looking to trade it for a family car. I need something to drive daily and "tinker" with. I was thinking of buying a cheap hatch and dropping in a motor from an integra. I was wondering what kind of perfomance to expect. I dont have anyone to ask around here, as they are all domestic guys and laugh and joke whenever I bring this up. They don't think I am serious about this. I don't want to spend more than about $5,000 total, car, engine, swap. Is this a realistic goal? Any help would be appreciated. I plan on doing most of the work myself. I'd be happy with mid 14's to start with.

I did it.
1992 Civic CX (no motor) $1000
1995 B18B1 Swap Shipped $1800
Install + parts $780
Exhaust $400
Total: $3980
It only runs 15.03 at 93mph

you could find an Integra LS swap from a 94-95 Integra, drop that in a 92-95 Civic hatchback or even a coupe, add a couple mods and better tires/wheels and have a fun car to drive for not much money. Once you start tuning the motor or going nuts over suspension and brakes and interior stuff you will be way over a $5000 budget... but thats all stuff you can play with later on, after you show your "buddies" that a 14 sec hatch is easily possible.
complete LS swap = $1500 or less
High mileage or salvage CX/VX Civic = $2000 or less
Cheap but effective intake/header/catback/wheels/tires/springs = $1000
(short ram/dc 4-2-1/custom piping/HX 14" alloys/azenis)
sell that LS tranny and buy a 92+ B16 tranny for better acceleration thru the tighter gearing of the B16 tranny.

thanks for the replies. I am going to see if I can find a Hatch, I like to look of hatchbacks, I live in the Atlanta area, stockbridge in particular. There is a badass turbocharged black civic coupe with bronze colored wheels I see from time to time. That would be my end goal. Would take a couple of years with wife and 3 kids though. Life was soo simple before kids..
