Trying to clear out a doubt (D15B)

Exactly what honda model came with a D15B VTEC-E engine? I'm not referring to neither the 3 Stage EK3 engine nor the original D15B VTEC. I mean a D15B VTEC-E with the VTEC-E valve cover.

Sorry if this is a repost. I searched and found nothing, and on the web the information about this is VERY ambiguous. My friend just got this engine for a junker and we're not sure if a D15Z1 valve cover was placed instead or if it truly is a D15B VTEC-E engine.

Was it on the Domani and the Aerodeck?

This was all I got on only one site:

MA7 domani 94-96 1.5L d15b vtec-e
MA9 5d 95-96 1.5L d15b vtec-e
MB3 5d/domani 97-00 1.5L d15b vtec-e
MB9 aerodeck 98-01 1.5L d15b vtec-e

Both this models seem to be JDM. Personally, I never knew from them until now.

Thanks in advance.

Look at the engine code on the block... that will tell you what block it is, and component verification should be another easy way to tell...

I don't know what country you are in.. in the US, the D15Z1 is the lean burn 3 stage VTEC Civic VX and CX I believe.

92-95 civics cx dont come with any type of vtec. so those years the only car that carry vtec-e are the vx. a way you can tell is the vtec-e valve cover is the exact same as the 92-95 civic si.

as for where it came off, i never herd of a d15b vtec-e. i have herd of the d15b vtec like you said. so all this blabbing i still dont know your answer.

Wrong, the Si Valve cover says VTEC, and has the Honda logo embedded in the cover, while the VX cover has the VTEC-E and honda logo embedded, so tell me how that is the same?

Aw man get out of here.

3 stage VTEC is a combination of VTEC and VTEC-E and was only found in JDM OBD2 ZC motors.

The VX D16Z1 is a VTEC-E motor that switches from 12 valves to 16.

The CX is an 8 valve motor with no kind of variable valve timing whatsoever.

Why are you telling him to check his engine code? His engine code says "D15B". That's common with JDM engines. That's the whole reason for his post.

Some VX valve covers say "VTEC-E" and some don't. I believe the 92 do not but I could be wrong. Not all OBD1 SOHC VTEC motors say "VTEC" on the valve cover. All 96+ SOHC valve covers say "honda". If you want the exact year they changed the valve covers you can search.

I would just pull off the valve cover and look at the cam. Your best alternative is to look for the little code above the exhaust runners ie "P2J". You'll have to search to decipher it.

Yes, thankyou.

VX 92-95 = VTEC-E
'96+ ZC = 3 stage VTEC (VTEC + VTEC-E)
92-95 jDM D15B = 3 stage VTEC
'92-'95 Si/Ex = VTEC
96+ HX = VTEC-E

If it just says D15B on it it's a JDM D15B and I'm pretty sure that has 3stage VTEC (VTEC-E + VTEC).

EDIT:
Don't base things on what the valvecovers say.

Re: Trying to clear out a doubt (Syndacate)

Everybody, thanks a lot for your inputs.

Basically, like I said, he bought the motor in a junker, and it's a D15B block, but it came with the VTEC-E valve cover.

I've never seen a D15B engine with a VTEC-E valve cover before, so after searching in forums and such, I found that some people actually put in the head of the D15Z1 (which we know is VTEC-E by factory spec) to raise compression. But D15B and D15Z1 are totally different engines. I told him this could be his case, maybe the previous owner did this.

After doing more searching, then I ran into a website which had the chassis codes and their engines for all of the generations and I found that some "Domani" and "Aerodeck" models had a "D15B VTEC-E" engine. If this is true, then maybe my friend's motor came from one of this cars, but this info is very hard to confirm, since they're Asian and Japanese market models.

3 Stage Engine is ruled out, since we checked and he doesn't have the dual VTEC switches like in the following picture:

http://asia.vtec.net/article/d15b/ek3vtec.jpg

So it leaves us out with either a swapped head or a VTEC-E only D15B engine which I never knew about.

Thanks guys.

The 2 stage d15b version is out of a JDM EG8 and the three stage it out of a JDM EK3.

P2J is on the obd2 vtec-e head as well. So that won't really tell him anything.

obd1, p07 = vtec-e
obd1, p08 = sohc vtec
