Urgent!!!
So i had to take my1995 JDM b16a2 swapped ej coupe to my mechanic to have a sheared bolt taken out. got it back the next day (today) and upon engaging VTEC on the highway in 3rd gear, the car had some of the loudest backfires i have ever heard and lost power. It sputtered a bit but i was able to drive it home keeping the rpms under 3k. The car idles fine but i know there is a major problem because of what happened in VTEC. I am scared that the mechanics joyrode my car last night and damaged it... Any ideas? Please!

Troubleshooting: JDM B16 is possessed. Idle and drives fine, but crazy under VTEC.
So i had to take my car to the mechanic to have a sheared bolt taken care of. I left it overnight, and today upon my ride home i engaged VTEC. The car backfired louder than i ever heard and the tach jumped all over and the engine lost power. Tried again and same thing. At this point i limped the car home under 3k rpm. She idles fine and even drives fine under 3k but i dont dare engage vtec for im afraid the engine will detonate... My biggest fear is that one of those mechanics joyrode my car last night and damaged it. Car is a 1995 coupe with JDM B16 swap. Only mods are Intake, test pipe and exhaust. sitting on new TEIN flex zs i nstalled. Please if anyone can chime in i dont know what to do and i definitly dont trust my mechanic anymore... Please help me!!!

Re: Urgent!!!
For starters, which bolt was sheared and then repaired? Just trying to make sense of what is urgent? To me, urgent is my car catching fire or sharting in my pants.... or both.

It was the lower control arm bolt that sheared i was putting on coilovers. The oil is at the top bead of the stick. I keep up on my oil levels always making sure shes got enough.

OP, do you even know what the VTEC solenoid looks like? Serious question here.

Yes i know the VTEC solenoid. I replaced the oil pressure switch a few months back as well as the two O rings in the housing under the VTEC solenoid... Had a slight oil leak at the time which i felt was taken care of when i replaced the two orings and the switch

Backfiring (true backfiring from the engine, not just unburnt gas going into the exhaust system then exploding) indicates the timing is wrong. Won't rev over 3000 or 3500 is the classic symptom of the timing belt having skipped a tooth. So check the cam timing.
