Default troubleshooting guidelines

i've done quite a bit of troubleshooting on my car, and i'm not really that experienced in R&R so i can take something off and forget to put it back on, i'm sure some of you have that problem too, but just out of curiosity, what precautions do you guys take to avoid that?

just the other day i took off my Y8 IM to clean out the gunk and crap in it, and putting it back on wasn't really that bad except that i kept dropping sockets and fasteners that were too stubborn to end up on the ground if you know what i mean x.x

but afterwards i noticed a rattle that really scared the poop out of me, sounded almost like metal grinding on metal just around 3k rpm. today it hit me though that i loosened the bracket under the IM to make it a little easier on myself to put it back on and mind you this is like 3 days later.

what do you all do to keep from making mistakes like that? or just anything including removing things like vacuum tubes and what not, just to remember where they need to be reconnected. just from one DIY-er to a thousand others, hints to avoid stupid newbie sh*t like that?
