Trouble Starting Civic. CYP Code...
Lately, I've been having trouble starting my 2000 Civic DX daily driver.
It WILL start, but only after trying and trying. The issue seems to be similar to some problems I had with it before (tuned it up, and fixed the issue before -- new cap, rotor, wires, plugs).
When I go to start the car, it takes a while of being on the starter to get it to hit off. Once it starts, the car seems to run & idle fine. It's the initial starting that is the problem.
1st thing I tried was changing the plugs. Cyl 4 had a darker brown than the rest. I took the car to Auto Zone to have the code(s) pulled, and it showed a misfire in cyl 4, CYP sensor issue, Primary O2 sensor issue (I've known about this -- replaced the sensor and it still throws the code. I haven't had time to run down the actual problem).
Just previous to this, my water pump went out. The check valve was leaking like a sieve. I had no other mode of transportation, and needing to get to school/work, had to drive it. I just kept coolant in it as best I could. She got hot a time or 2. I was afraid I might've blown a headgasket leading to these starting issues, but compression test came back good. (1-188, 2-180, 3-198, 4-190). So, that doesn't seem to be the issue.
When the timing cover was pulled to replace timing belt and water pump, the crank sensor behind the pulley was mangled. It looked like it had been like this for some time. However, there had never been any issues with the car starting or running.
Starting is the issue. It seems to run & idle just fine. I can drive it around town (stop and go traffic) with no issues once it starts.
Any thoughts?!

IT could be a fuel pump issue. I had this problem with my car about 6 months ago. It turned out to be a shitty fuel pump that was going. Replaced it with a walbro 255 and havent had a problem since.

Re: Trouble Starting Civic. CYP Code...
have had that hypothesis posed, too.
What do you think about that CYP code?
I guess I should add that the times that I've had trouble starting the car, I've been able to SMELL fuel. Whether or not it's getting enough, IDK. But, I was somewhat operating under the impression that would rule out a fuel problem...

Re: Trouble Starting Civic. CYP Code...
I know this is an old thread, but ran across it and can't help but throw in two cents. If you are smelling fuel and it takes a while to start I would definately check for leaks at the fuel rail. If fuel is leaking from the orings on the top of the injectors (which is a common issue with age) then it will take a few primes of the pump to get pressure up to operating specs.
