Transmission whine; higher rpm downshifts
Hey everyone. Was driving home the other night and noticed my clutch pedal seemed to feel a bit different. The height of clutch engagement was lower to the floor. Got home okay and checked it out the next morning; was a bit low on fluid. So I added a bit and the pedal pressure seemed better. Not to what it was, but better.
The past few days I started noticing it becoming a bit more difficult to get it into gear. Especially 1st and 5th gear? Yesterday driving to town I started hearing a whine when i'd downshift. Not "high" rpm downshifts, but like 4k downshifts. What could this be?
I bought a clutch master cylinder and slave but haven't had time to put em on; the pedal feels okay enough to drive for now; but that has nothing to do with the sudden whine.
If my clutch is going out, would this make a whine noise? This would account for the difficulty and scratches sometimes going into gear would it not? Or do you think my transmission might be going out? Up until the other day everything was peachy.
Thanks in advance everyone.

You've got 2 seperate issues. Clutch pedal grabing lower than normal is hydraulic clutch issue, either the master cylinder, slave cylinder and the line between them is bad, or some combination of the 3. The whining while down shifting is one or more of the 5 bearings in the transmission going bad.

Yeah, I guess i'll keep my eyes open for a new transmission.
I've got a b16... Is it worth it to buy parts from honda and attempt to rebuild? I was reading a really great diy rebuild late last night but i've never done stuff like that before.
If I were to buy a replacement transmission; what will work? I've got a 1994 b16a3. Will any b16 transmission work even from a 99/00 Civic? Or any 94+ GSR transmission?

Re: Transmission whine; higher rpm downshifts
It seems like I may be leaking transmission fluid out from where the axle enters the transmission. Changed the fluid and I was considerably low. Shifting is much smoother and the sound seems to have disappeared.
My question now is; how do I fix this seal issue? Is there a seal inside the transmission? Do I need to replace the axle?

There's also a slight bit of play in the axle. Is this because the seal is bad? Or do I have more serious problems? Will the new seal fix this play?

oem/refurbished axles? sounds like the driveaxle seal is bad. plus when you put the axle in, can you pull it out with your hand? no tools, I mean

Re: Transmission whine; higher rpm downshifts
Been researching and it looks like the axle seals are simple to change. Pry em out and tap in the new ones flush to the casing. I'll change it monday and see what happens.
They look to be reman. axles. Can I remove the axle without prying? No... if my diff bearing were bad would this be the case? Or are you asking because your wondering if the axle was just not seated correctly?
Hopefully when an axle seal goes bad it creates a bit of leakage/play and I don't have to remove my transmission and replace the diff. bearing...
