Transmission making noise but car not moving
hey everyone. well yesterday i was at a stop sign and when i started crossing, the gear felt like it popped out. so i popped it back into 1st and stepped on the gas to continue to cross the street but the gear didnt work. so i parked with the little speed i caught and i tried to put it in gear again released the clutch and the transmission made noise like it was spinning but the car didnt move. i tried all the gears 1-5 and reverse and all of em made noise but no reaction. today i took apart the transmission and checked the axles to see if they were popped out but they were ok. i spinned the spindle on the transmission while it was in gear and the parts where the axles are inserted in were also spinning. i then checked the clutch and it still looked pretty meaty. does anyone know what could be wrong??
thanks in advance.

Re: Transmission making noise but car not moving
1) The thread title should describe the tech problem - edited.
2) You also MUST provide all pertinent information about your car and engine (set up).
Sounds to me like one axle had popped out of the differential.

Is this a stock car?
I still suspect the splines, of the hubs in particular. Do either the axle ends/nuts spin when you hear the noise?
Assuming the axles are fully inserted into the differential see if you can safely! get a view of the axles while someone attempts to drive forward. Maybe use a mirror under the car and a flashlight. See if one of them or any part thereof spins otherwise look more closely at the clutch.
Do not lay or place body parts in the path of a possible moving car/tire!

You said a 97 so I'm assuming you have a hydraulic transmission? Check your clutch fluid lines and master and slave cylinders for leaks. Make sure there isn't air in the lines so the clutch becomes fully disengaged. Will it go in any gear with the car not running?

RonJ@HT u were super close
found the problem. the axle came out of its hub on the brake end n when i removed the axle it popped back in place so it looked to be good. gonna pick up an axle today .
