Default Transmission Gurus UNITE!

Pre-Amble- I dont know jack about transmissions hardly.

My mechanic tells me my reverse bearing is loose and i need to get it fixed. My uncle tells me my throwout bearing is ready to go soon as well. 96 dx stock motor.
I go to the reccomended tranny shop by my mechanic's orders and they tell me it will cost $700 to replace the reverse bearing. Then i ask him if it is easy to replace the throwout bearing while they have the tranny off anyway. He sounds sketchy and says no price change. Im a little skeptical. But i think im being ripped off.
BTW i live in carrollton GA where redneck bastards are all around. Where all the mechanics Throw their noses in the air when they hear the word "Import" Everyone tells me to sell my car and get a trans am. I dont want one, but about my tranny?

Just pickup a new tranny...not worth rebuilding your existing one.
Think about it...would you rather just get a used tranny for 1/8th the price of a rebuild?

Around here you can find d-series tranny from 50-80 bucks good

A $50-80 tranny isn't going to be new, and you never know what shape it'll be in.

Better off paying a little more from a junk yard that might let you bring it back if it doesn't work that well. I think you can find DX tranny's from junk yards for about $100-125 (at least here in Los Angeles).

So what is the tranny doing? You said what other people thought is wrong, without saying what its actually doing.

A throw out bearing will only make noise while you are using the clutch, but the "reverse" bearing will only do it while in reverse. But they must either be talking about a main shaft or countershaft bearing.

No actually i believe they are quite right. I trust their judgement very much. From my understanding you can hear the throwout when the engine is idleing when the clutch is not down.

Just buy another tranny. $700 is an absurd price. To give you a comparison, a GOOD GSR tranny (not that you can use it) would be $600-700. Your tranny, on the other hand is worth $300 tops, even in perfect working order.

buy the helms, and start wrenchin'. After a few mishap, you can charged people to do rebuilds. Rebuildin' trannies are a cake

Tell us what your transmission is doing so we can help you troubleshoot it. If you have a week or so (probally what it's going to take you to do the first one) you can drop the tranny, replace the bearings yourself and have it back in for under 100 dollars. I'd look at getting a new Y8 transmission. I just swapped over and it's the best bang for the buck mod I've ever seen (my turbo setup included).

I believe the guy was talking about the whole Y8 motor... not just tranny for $700. <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by litterbox &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">How is that possible? What isn't moving at idle? The input shaft is always moving. But most people say they hear throwout bearing when they depress (press in) the clutch pedal... not sitting in neutral with it engaged.

When a TOB goes bad is it because there's no more grease where the TOB slides onto the input shaft?

either way buy a new clutch kit - resurface the fly wheel and get an ex trans - your car will be alot more quicker - and will cost roughly the same
ex trans=300 bucks at any junk yard
clutch kit=200 bucks
and find a good person to help you !
saved 200 bucks !

well, after 1500 rpms i hear like a vibration type noise until i shift. Sometimes it runs normal on a cold morning until the engine warms up. Then it vibrates all de time. the other noise occurs during idle, like a light tick. I changed the belts and that was not the prob.

If i do that i might replace the flywheel, but a new puck isnt hardly worthy if im not dramatically increasing my hp. A stiff clutch is only neccessary for high hp applications. As far as i've been educated.... I dont claim to know anything

but while replacing the tranny might as well get a new clutch with some new meat on it ! .. you could always use the one you have but who knows how much life it has left - im not saying to go aftermarket racing just new

Oh yeah, i would do all i can while the tranny is out. Makes sense... But thats kool. I just always read on autox forums where they say a puck type clutch pate isnt necessary until ur going F/I or serious HP.
