Transmission fluid change
Oil cahnges are pretty straight forward but I was
wondering how long do you guys go between tranmission
fluid changes?? I bought my 1997 Civic EX with 81000 miles
and im not sure what the guy changed at all. And is there
anything else I should worry about besides trans and motor oil.
thanks

Re: Transmission fluid change (jL iLLuZiOnz 9)
I really don't know. Never had my tranny work right for 30k so I have to change it everytime I pull an axle or drop the whole thing.

Re: Transmission fluid change (Re3irth)
Change it yourself. It wont take you as long as it would to change your oil.
Jack up the car, remove the drain plug, drain the tranny fluid, then refill through the fill hole using a funnel with a tube on the end of it. When the fluid spills out of the hole, you're full.

Im not sure I get a good image of what your talking about.
But, since i am under the car, wouldnt gravity prevent from liquid
flowing upwards INTO my transmission?

I thought honda tranny fluid was just 10w-30 motor oil, couldent you just use a synthetic like 10w-30 Mobil 1?

Re: Transmission fluid change (DelSolSi93)
you can use regular motor oil in the tranny but to get the best performance/protection and smoothest shifts i'd use the honda mtf.
the other guy that says hes taking it to a shop and dosent think they will use the honda mtf, go to the dealer buy the stuff then go to the shop and tell them this is what you want them to use to put back into the trans.

Re: Transmission fluid change (hellshock2182)
Honda= Honda OEM. Dont use synthetic, stick to Honda OEM. Depending on your driving I change mine every 15k. And buy a magnetic drain plug for both yor oil and tranny!

Re: Transmission fluid change (Re3irth)
No synthetic motor oil in the trans, period. I would also consider shorting the change interval of 30k to 15k after reading that Honda mtf thins out to a low 20w oil rather quickly. A good syn gear oil would be ideal if you are planning to leave in your mission fluid for 30k miles.

Re: Transmission fluid change (Two_K Si)
I purchased MTF from Honda World for like $4-5/quart a week ago. Purchased Honda MTF at Acura Dealership for like $3ish because I got new clutch installed a few day after that . Go figure....the same Honda OEM MTF costs more at Honda dealership than at Acura dealerhips...

to change it...look at the tranny fluid drain plug, and then look up and to the left to find the fill plug. ALWAYS undo the fill plug first cause if for some reason it is so tight you cant get it undone, you havent drained all the fluid yet. otherwise you are owned cause you cannot refil your tranny fluid without drilling out the bolt or something. Anyways, undo the fill bolt, then drain the fluid from the drain bolt. Reinstall the drain bolt and attach small hose to a funnel (or use a fluid pump to pump the fluid from the bottle to the tranny), insert the hose into the tranny fluid fill hole, and fill until the fluid begins to pour out the hole. Make sure your car is on level ground though, otherwise it will not fill to maximum capacity (just short of 2 quarts i believe).

you can refill your tranny by removing the speed sensor too
