Default transmission fluid

Just getting ready to put a new transmission in my 96 honda civic, just wondering what type of oil i shoulid run in here?

The stuff in my old transmission looks & smells like a 90 weight gear oil but the manual i have been looking at says to use honda manual tranmission fluid (MTF).

What do you guys use?

I have never had a problem with Honda MTF, but some people recommend mixing in a quart of GM Synchromesh. I think you are fine to just use Honda MTF unless the tranny you are putting in has grinds and you're looking for a temporary fix, in which case the GM Synchromesh is the better choice.

if u have no problems with your transmission grinds, syncros then just use honda mtf its good stuff. if you do by any chance have a syncro prob or grinds and stuff Id recommend gm syncro mesh its very good stuff makes a crappy tranny feel not so crappy

Honda tranny fluid is usually the best to go with.

If the oil you drained out is 80w-90 gear oil, then it's no wonder you're changing the transmission. Never ever, under any circumstances, should you fill a Honda FWD manual transmission with gear oil - it will be destroyed in a matter of miles.

Use genuine Honda Manual Transmission Fluid. If none is available, you can use 10w-30 engine oil in a pinch, but shift quality will not be smooth.

I used to use GM/Pennzoil Synchromesh years ago before Honda reformulated its MTF. In late 2006, Honda MTF was changed to a lower viscosity formula resembling that of the Synchromesh, so I ended up switching back to Honda MTF. The current Honda MTF and GM Synchromesh fluids feel about the same to me, but the Synchromesh is more expensive and more difficult to find.

Some people have claimed good luck using Red Line MTL and BG SyncroShift II. I personally prefer to use Honda chemicals and oils because I've never been disappointed by them; Honda goes out of its way to offer the best chemicals that they can.

I've used honda's old formula before and wasn't too happy with it, I mean it was ok but the shifting felt really notchy with it in there then I read on here about the gm synchromesh and that there is a pennzoil version of it that you can get at autozone. If you don't have lsd which most of us don't the regular gm/pennzoil synchromesh is just fine, there is a gm friction modified version but use it in lsd's only. I've been running this stuff for at least 5 yrs and over 60k miles, my hx has 179k now.

Honda MTF should do fine, i acutally just replaced my transmission fluid last week and i had the common third gear grind, and as so as i replaced the tranny fluid it went away, so Honda MTF all the way...

One very important thing to remember about any fluids: Honda does not have a refinery. Therefore ALL fluids have been produced by a second party and then get a Honda label. One needs only to find the refiner's product and then buy the exact same product at a greatly reduced cost. Pay close
attention to the API rating and save $$$.

x2. See http://honda.lioness.googlepages.com/manualtrannyfluid for a discussion of why circa 1990 Honda owner's manuals say you can use 10W-30 and why this is now outdated. Get the Honda MTF. The really good news is its maintenance change interval is longer than and so it costs about the same as the engine oil.
