Default Transmission/clutch problems D15

Hello all, I'm new to honda-tech forum and I have a problem. My 95 civic dx has been running great up until lately. Starting about a week ago or so, when I would release the clutch to gear down to accelerate or deccelerate, there is this grinding sound as it goes into the lower gear. Anyone ever run across this before? I'm not sure if its the clutch or the tranny but I replaced the clutch about two years ago and I'm a pretty easy driver so I doubt its that. And it also cuts off if I try and take off in 5th gear (a test I heard of to test the clutch). The sound is also heavily present when I am driving in first gear and slightly in second gear. So, my guess is that its the tranny but I wanted to run this by you and get your opinion from more experienced Honda peeps. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like a input shaft bearing. It actually makes noise in every gear it's just more noticeable when your going slower. It's hard to describe a noise over the internet, might be better to find someone local that does transmission work and have them listen to give you a better idea.

thank you for your post. so, to you, does it sound like I might need a new tranny? and if so, do you know where I might find a cheap replacement? thanks again!

Input shaft bearings require a complete teardown and rebuild so the labor may kill you. You can usually find a good used unit in the classifieds here or sometimes at a salvage yard.

i will be in charlotte on oct 7th for the honda-tech meet. I can sell you a rebuilt ex transmission with parts that are used, but inspected and good condition for $200

no grinding gears, no gears popping out, or anything of the sort

Might sound like a dumb question but does an EX tranny hook up to a DX motor and will there be any problems later? Thank you for your reply!

That's not a dumb question. Yes, all D-series transmissions will hook-up,

And if you're a spirit-y driver you will enjoy an ex transmission. It has much shorter gear ratios and still gets good mpg. But with a -series it's hard to get bad gas mileage.

So if you do replace it, go for the Ex tranny.

Care to wager $100 on that statement?

I know Bense nor Bauley will challenge.........

as long as it's in his gen and it's a zc or hax trans. But yeah, pretty much all ex/dx/cx will match.

k Thanks bye

I can assemble it with dx gears, whichever you prefer.

3.25, 3.722, 4.058, or 4.25 final drive, whichever you prefer

stock for your car is 4.058

higher number = greater acceleration and lower top speed
lower number = lower acceleration and greater top speed

some like long gears for mpg
some like short gears for accel

it's all in your preference

I have I think the same problem. I hear a chatter noise (varies in sound according to how i let out the clutch and how warm the motor or weather is-- also causes minor swearing inside the car) when I let out the clutch. I have been told that the flywheel needs resurfacing. I can only guess that this is because of dumping the clutch when drag racing (which i no longer do because autocross is WAY more fun in a civic).
I can also hear a 'knacking' noise (frequency goes up when speeding up) once I leave in first gear, and a little in second, but fades away because i cant hear it at speeds above 15-20 mph. i have no idea what this could be, but maybe engine related if it occurs at same RPM? Any help?
So thats all i know.... That my trans is a lost cause. i will be getting a new one soon
