Default Transmission on 90 Civic

I have a question....Yesterday when I left work, The car made this weird noise like when you hit a puddle, and the water hits underneath the car....Didn't think anything of it. Then this morning, When I left to go to work again, It wouldn't shift into 2nd gear for a few seconds, then it made that weird noise again, and shifted into 2nd. It seems like once the car is warmed up and makes that noise, it runs fine.

I checked the fluid, and it seemed low, But I checked it with the engine running, and the car in Park.

The transmission has 194K on it, so I know it won't last forever, Does anyone know if that is the right way to check the fluid? Does anyone know if there is some special transmission fluid that might fix this problem.

If anyone has any suggestions it would greatly be appreciated.

Mike
