Trans swap time
Can anyone give me an idea of approximatley how long to swap a worn d-16 trans with another d16 trans- 1997 civic coupe with bad mainshaft bearing/ bearing whine? This would be for someone who is pretty good at doing civic maintenance, etc and proficient with shop tools.
3 to 4 hours dissasembly to reinstallation sound about right?

Re: Trans swap time (97civicdx)
depends on you. if you don't stop and know exactly what you're doing, probably 2-5 hours.
You gotta take out your axels, meaning you gotta remove the caster arm and lower arm from your from discs. You have to disconnect the shift linkage, remove ~ 8 bolts on the transmission plus ~ 3 on the rear mount, 2 on the torque mount, 2-3 on your side mount. unplug your reverse switch and vss. disconnect your slave cylinder from the transmission. pull the transmission back ~3-4 inches then drop it. then reverse to put the new one in. don't forget to lubricate the new parts and replace your release bearing
If you don't know what you're doing (adding in unforseen problems, breaks, moments of i dont know what to do) 6-10?

Re: (jtchinoy)
Its not an auto to manual swap. Its replacing a tired manual trans with another manual trans. I know the steps because it similiar to doing an axle. I know its more than that but thats the question............

well just giving you a comparison. forgot to mention the guides say 8-10 hours for a auto-manual. so yeah... 8-10 hours became 1.5 weeks
Well if you know the steps, don't know why you're asking about time. 2-5 if you're good, alot longer if you run into trouble/ don't know the exact procedure to remove it.

A bit OT, but is that mainshaft bearing / brearing whine sound something like churning a bucket of marbles and goes away when you depress the clutch?

That's what I initially thought since the noise is coming from the front of the tranny. But I'm not sure after reading this thread... So I just wanted to confirm the noise I'm hearing in my dd with the mainbearing/whine 97civicdx is experiencing with his tranny...

Re: Trans swap time (Dagul)
The whine happens with the clutch pedal up. It is the input shaft bearing and not the throwout bearing. The Throwout bearing whine happens clutch pedal down.

Can the same be said when you can still hear the whirring noise with the clutch pedal down coasting to a stop?
