If you don't know don't bother answering.
To answer your question a Y80 is always a GS-R tranny, but an S80 could be either an LS, GS-R, or Type R tranny. The only way to tell the difference is to tear the trannies apart and count teeth on the gears and/or check for an LSD to see which one it really is.
Unfortunately the tranny code means nothing if it's an S80. I have an S80 Type R tranny, but I've seen plenty of LS and GS-R S80 trannies to know that the code doesn't mean anything.
Why do you ask?
Also would you like the gear ratios for each type of tranny?

I second that. Mine is a GSR tranny and its s80.

Re: tranny? y80 vs. s80 (1 point 6)
According to hondaswap, the Y80 is LS/GS/RS, but B18C5 posted that Y80 is always GS-R. We just bought a Y80 tranny supposedly off a GS-R and need to be sure. Can you someone cofirm which it is? Hate to do all this work and find out it's an LS tranny.

Re: tranny? y80 vs. s80 (SoichiroH)
All I can say is that in my seven years of working in and around Honda/Acura dealers and shops I've never once seen a Y80 in anything other than a GS-R, and if I did the owner informed me that it was swapped in from a GS-R.
Again from what I've seen all Y80 are GS-R, but not all GS-R are Y80 - some are S80.

Re: tranny? y80 vs. s80 (B18C5-EH2)
Stick axles into the tranny and turn one side if you can. if the other side rotates in the same direction as the one your turning, then it's a type-r (unless it has an aftermarket LSD). If you turn one axle and the other axle either doesn't turn at all or turns the opposite way, then it's not a type-r trans. I had to do this to a "Type-R" tranny my buddy was looking at. Turned out to be a GSR. Hope this helps.

You are correct; that chart up top is wrong.
Also note that the 4.78 final drive equipped trannis come with the GS-R spec 4th and 5th gears, so highway cruising in 5th gear is exactly the same as the 4.400 ITR trannies.

Re: (B18C5-EH2)
Well help me answer this, I have a 98 jdm gsr swap with a s80 lsd tranny, is it just a gsr tranny with lsd or is it a type r tranny with a 4.40 , or 4.78 final drive. It says s80 and so does my friends type r tranny from the same year. So is it basically a type r tanny or just a gsr with optional lsd in it.

That is NOT true.
I have a Type R tranny and when my car is jacked up and I spin one wheel clockwise the other wheel spins counter clockwise when the tranny is in neutral.
This is a common misconception about LSD trannies. They do not always spin the same way when you spin one wheel.

Again S80 means nothing. It simply means it's a 1994-2001 Integra tranny, and nothing more. I posted all of that up top - did you read the entire topic?
If you have a JDM GS-R tranny with opt. LSD then that's exactly what you have - a JDM GS-R with LSD. Your tranny has a 4.400 final drive and taller 2-5 gears than the USDM Type R tranny.
This is how so many people get screwed when it comes to Honda trannies. People buy "Type R" trannies when they are in fact LS trannies, etc.
The only true way to tell what type of tranny you have is to split the case and count teeth and do the math to get your gear ratios and final drive ratios.
Looking for LSD is easy, but again it won't tell you if it's definately a Type R tranny or not. It could be a GS-R with an LSD.
Here's a shot of an LSD out of a tranny. That big hole is where the axles go in, so you're looking for an open hole there. If you see anything blocking your view like a pin that goes diaginal then it's not an LSD.

It's possible that you have a Y80 tranny, but I doubt it's an LS tranny. I'm not saying it's impossible, but IMo the more likely scenario is that a previous owner swapped the LS tranny for a Y80 GS-R tranny.
Again I'm not saying that there's no way there could be a Y80 LS tranny, but I've not seen one.

Well I have no VIN plate on mine, do all trannys have a VIN plate from the factory? or is it on the block? i forgot, I got rid of my LS block for a JDM b16a along time ago....

As I stated in an IM, all trannies that came in the car had a VIN plate. If your tranny has rviets left in it, but no VIN plate then someone ripped it out. If it has two clean holes there where the VIN plate should be then it was purchased brand new from the dealer. Brand new trannies have no VIN plate.
I'm not sure if JDM trannies have a VIN plate though...
In any case it sounds to me like someone before you swapped out the stock LS S80 in favor of a GS-R tranny. Sometimes s shop will have an extra tranny and charge a customer for a stock swap and not even realize that they gave away a GS-R tranny.

Re: tranny? y80 vs. s80 (B18C5-EH2)
my tranny has no rivet holes or anything, just the Y80 barcode sticker. The car was purchased with 110k on it and I am the 2nd owner and the car was stock. so I dunno.

Re: tranny? y80 vs. s80 (rewsnaeht)
those with GSR motors/tranny, where do your shifts fall? when I shift @ 8200 I land around 5500-6k in 1st and 2nd, and around 5500 from then on.

Re: tranny? y80 vs. s80 (rewsnaeht)
Well I just realized that the tranny VIN thing probably does not apply to 1994-1995 trannies. I think all they had was a sticker with a barcode and the tranny code on it like you're saying.
I don't know which year they started the VIN plates, but I know for a fact that the newer ones like at least 1998-up have them unless they are brand new from the dealer purchased by themselves as a replacement tranny.
If you've truly got a Y80 LS tranny then you're the first I've ever seen/heard of. I never said it was impossible, just improbable.
