tranny shop tools me I need new Transmission... HELP!!!!!
I have a 97 Honda Civic lx bought it with 50000 miles about 5 years ago it has 113000 now. check engine light came on Sunday. codes came up 0700\0715 for a sensor. took it to a transmission shop. They pulled the sensor for diagnostic discovered it was dirty with sediment plugged it back in cleared the code and did not charge me. he told me the tran needs to be rebuilt no real timeline on how long the tranny had before failure. told me the fluid is burnt and tran is beyond fluid change for a fix. the only problem the car shows is delayed engagement when the car is warm. works well other than that. car is worth 2000 quoted me 2500 for a rebuild. is it better to rebuild now? wait for tranny to go out. should I attest drop pan and change filter and fluid? Any information would be greatly appreciated!!!! thank you!

Auto or manual? And agreed that if the trans is still working for the most part, try completely flushing and refilling the fluid first to see if that helps. May as well drive the current trans until it completely falls apart rather than throwing money at it now.
In either case, you can find a good/functional used transmission for far cheaper than that. Check hmotorsonline (or give them a call) and/or find similar shops in your area or reputable shops on eBay that sell used gear.

How in the crap are you quoted $2500 for a transmission rebuild? Does this include labor for other work? Shop around. There are many places you can source a transmission rebuild, and a bunch of places will also do the labor. If this car is mission critical, I do not recommend getting a used one.
The 6th gen is stupid easy to work on. Even in Orlando with my buddy's 2002 Civic I was quoted $1k in the rebuild, and $400 in labor (removal and installation). I decided to do the labor myself since I could just pull the engine and do the rear main, crank, cam seals, and a timing kit on the floor.
Don't hold your breath on the fluid working. It's worth a shot, but Honda was dumb with the internal unserviceable filters You can still clean the magnet, but it's like trying to drain oil out of your car by wiping the dipstick.

Tony I'm curious about your flushing story now. I've never had good response from Honda automatics. I've done a drain and fill several times on a 91 DX, 96 LX, 2002 EX, and a 2006 EX. Only the 2002 had codes (Obviously the 90 didn't). None of them responded well. The 90 DX even got worse. The 2002 failed outright, and the 96 and 06 didn't give a crap and kept screwing up.
I was able to fix a 2001 Dakota with a pan drop, but those trucks have two serviceable filters.

OP, it's going to be a gamble with anything used. I've purchased three auto transmissions used and the filthy dickmunchers lied about their condition. One was a reputable importer (My engine from them is still good, going on 8 years), and the other two were private sellers. It's cheaper on labor to just get a good one outright. Do not purchase used if this car is mission critical. Honda autos already kill themselves young at 90-120k. My ex's 2006 survived to 160k (slipping between 3-4 constantly) somehow before shitting itself.
If you flush (drain and fill 3x), you will likely waste up to $100 in fluid. If this car is mission critical for you, I would not recommend doing anything with the current transmission. How mechanically savvy are you? Get yourself a rebuild with a warranty and call it a day, or sell the car as-is.
Is it in the budget for a newer car? It really isn't a good idea to own an older car unless you can fix it yourself. You will eventually get raped for intermittent labor more than an average monthly payment.
I will never own a Honda automatic because they are just pieces of **** in my experience. Only my buddy's 2002 which is freshly rebuilt has been any good, but it's still been less than 10k miles. We'll see what happens. This shop upgraded the cooler and torque converter, then added an inline filter.
My advice to you is find some shitty dealer to trade it into, park it cold, then bring it in cold. Trade it in. I wish we did this with my buddy's 2002 a LONG time ago.

Upkeep is important if you don't plan on buying another vehicle every 5 yrs.

old crv had 380+k before i sold it, have had multiple civics well into the 200's. some people run an inline filter on the lines, but if you change fluid on time, use the correct fluid, and don't constantly beat the hell out of them they run for a long time. 98-02 accords, pilot, and odysseys of similar vintage have bad auto transmissions, as do 99-04? tl's. rest are decent, excluding the hybrid and HX cvt. cvt transmissions are trash.

Drive it until it dies and replace it with a good used transmission. Make sure it comes from another Y7, Y8 despite looking identical is not the same and will throw codes and shift weird. Make sure you replace the torque converter with a good used one at the same time, or have the original remaned as it will be contaminated with metal shavings. Make sure to flush out the trans cooler in the rad at this time as well as the lines and rubber hoses if reusing the originals. Changing the fluid in the current transmission is almost always a waste of time and money. The symptoms and codes sound like classic Honda transmission failure.

Re: tranny shop tools me I need new Transmission... HELP!!!!!
thank you again for all of your time. I see I will be looking for a remanufactured transmission. I don't find much online that is in the Dallas area other than trans shops some of them may have these I will have to make some phone calls . does anyone have experience with these online vendors I see a lot of them on google hard to tell what I'm getting. I know someone dropped a plug to a place in ohio. is it worth having one shipped that I know has been properly manufactured? how do I know for sure they have been properly remanufactured? anyway the code came back up today this time the transmission was acting funny when the light came on I had to switch gears my self from 2 to d3 to d4 to allow things to run smoothly. if I clean the sensor up again might it run as before the code came on again. will changing the fluid stop the sensor from becoming contaminated as the sensor is probably causing the tranny to shift in the wrong timing because it can't get a signal through? what is a reasonable price for as reman transmission? seems the major chain auto part stores still want well over 1000 to 2000 for one? sorry for the head ache guys. maybe this ll learn me to change that fluid every 40000 miles. I'm sure ill have more questions please keep the comments coming.

You're going to be paying at least $1000 for a rebuilt transmission and I would say probably closer to $2000. The last time I needed one I paid $75 for a used one with the torque converter and it worked fine. You can buy quite a few used transmissions for the price of one rebuilt unit if you're installing them yourself.

Given that the code went away and has not returned, multiple drain-refill cycles with Castrol Import ATF (shop around for the cheapest 4 or 5 gallon jug - ~$20) has an excellent chance for long term success. If shifting becomes a bit harsh, then do a drain-refill(s) with Honda ATF. It's expensive, but can smooth out shifting.
