Default Tranny Questions for an EK....

I'm so sad...I have bearing noise coming from my tranny and might have to rebuild it or replace it caused by my short shifter. (I didn't know that short shifters can have such a damaging result to my tranny. Anyhoot, heard I can replace it with a GSR or Si tranny? If so, what do you guys recommend and how much am I looking at replacing it.

My poor hatch only has 60K...I'm so bummed.

I hear to rebuild my tranny I have to drop $1,200. Ouch.

Thanks!!!

Well it depends on what motor your have. If you're running your stock D-Series motor, then no, you cannot run a GSR or Si tranny. What you can use would be any D-series tranny. For better gearing, I would go with either 92-00 EX, or EG Si (D16Z6) trannies.

Your short shifter ruined your tranny?? ummmm....okaaayyyy

Anyways....a 96-00 civic EX tranny is what you want. It has stronger shift forks than the Z6 tranny.

gotta watch out for those short shifters blowin trannys up... I wouldn't listen to the person who told you that anymore.

Marauder is right... 96-00 trans is better than that from the z6.

Short-shifters can do their fair share of damage to trannies, but totally ruining them is a little far-fetched. They can however do a number on your synchros and possibly your bearings.

I bet it's your Main Input Shaft bearing, it's about a $15 part from Honda...

I really don't see how a short shifter can cause any damage. A quality one at least.

Quality or not really doesn't matter. Short shifters are made to shorten the throw of a shift which is something that synchros cannot handle very well. Mashing through the gears with your short shifter will wear out your synchros much faster, especially you drag guys who really like to slam the car from 1st-2nd, then pile-drive that sucker into 3rd. Its logic really, if you know how the tranny works that is...

Why is everyone suggesting 96-00 d-series trannies?

Short shifter doesn't cause damage but it sure wears out the synchro's faster than the stock shifter.

Only if your hand can't put put it into gear at the right time. Its easier to slam gears with a short throw shifter, but you don't HAVE to.

Stronger shift fork. And the 96+ ex tranny is what you want due to the shorter gears. You can find one for 250 or less.

hold up!!! shoot! let me try save some face here.... I posted cuz I want to learn...If I knew the answer to my question, I would not have posted.
Let's not rip about how I "know nothing at all."

We are all on here to post while offering and receiving everyone's 2 cents.....no?

As Byron said, I'm a SHE (do guys really put "doll" at the end of the SN?) I have a stock motor..and since I've never run into tranny problems until now, I've never had to ask.... I just threw out suggestions that were given to me...I was also advised by my mechanic (and I trust him so!) that my short shifter is what caused my tranny problems.

May be I shouldn't have taken that so personal.

So back to my original thread...I would totally do a swap, but that would take money out of my coilover and exhaust fund for my other baby.....::sigh::

I have a stock engine......Better to replace with an EX tranny than to shell out $1200 to rebuild my tranny? I dont even know how much all this is gonna run me...

Oopsy - Ricey, thanks for the info! Didn't realize til after I posted this response.

damn all this debate over whether the SS caused the problem or not, who cares the main issue is that the tranny is in need of a rebuilt or replacement. Dawn who ever told u the GSR or Si tranny will fit must have been off that day. The only Si tranny that will fit in ur car is the EG Si's and thats even a maybe. I dont know about paying $1200 for rebuilt one. If you do a lil shopping around you can find a used tranny(working in good condition) for probably $300 or under. And as for labor, I dont see it costing that much, either way you will still come out ahead vs having your rebuilt.
